F55: odyssey 7Q and F55

I was wondering if anyone knows what the 7Q can record from the F55. I know it can record 4k, but will that be raw 12bit. And does anyone know if it can record HFR at 2k?

Cheers!

I'm sure that Mitch will see this and jump on it for a more official answer, but the only way to record raw from F5/55 is via the dedicated connector to the Sony AXS-5.

I was told by Dan that it will not record RAW, as there is no RAW signal out of the F55 like there is on the FS700. So the most you can really expect from the F55 with a 7Q is 4k over SDI into uncompressed, and eventually ProRes once that officially becomes available.

I'm guessing you can also rent some of the other codecs and compress the 4k from the F55 but......

It will be 10bit 422, that is the only 4K output accessible by 3rd parties on the 55.

Plus side, you can get ProRes that way. Downside, probably nothing higher quality than that. Not a terrible way to be if you just gotta have ProRes 4K.

As has been noted above, the only output available for us to capture from the camera is 4K 422 10-bit video over four HD-SDI feeds. I believe the highest framerate would be 60p.

considering this is the same bit-depth and color space as the camera can do internally via XAVC, I'm not sure what the benefit of coupling a 7Q with an F55 would be really. (other than instant conversion to an alternative codec and/or color space should it eventually be possible).

..oh and it makes for a killer screen.

There might be a cost benefit using CD's 960gb SSD's @1200+/- vs. SxS Pro+ 128gb cards @ 1400 each... but then again if you have to buy / rent the codec you may be right back where you started. I plan on getting the 7 not the 7q just for use as a monitor - especially when using it with a brushless gimbal like the Movi M5 or M10....

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but does anyone know if the F55 will fit on the M5 or not?

"I don't mean to hijack your thread, but does anyone know if the F55 will fit on the M5 or not?"

I doubt it, a mate of mine couldn't get it to balance on the m10 with a canon CNE prime... to long. I would require a mod of the M10 to be able to balance it.

Just wondering if Pro Res 422 10 bit or 12 bit is supported in this Aug 13th Beta release specifically regarding Sony's F55?
HD FORMAT 1080 60p? 2K, 4K etc...so we know what to expect. Do you have a complete list? We realize higher frame rates are not possible...
But 23.98, 29.97, 59.94 are...and at what res?
Thanks!

We know it is a new card that has to get installed inside the camera, so it's not just a matter of a new firmware.

We don't know exactly when its coming, but likely December and likely it will only be available in HD or 2K.

Maybe time to ask on the Sony forums, maybe there is some further info on it. I will post something.

Nothing new on the ProRes option. I know it will be an actual hardware installation. I do not know shipping date or price. And this is not "I am under NDA so I have to pretend I don't know." It is I don't know.

As of today, the Odyssey7Q can record Apple ProRes 422(HQ) in 1080p up to 59.94. That's as fast as the F55 will output that resolution over SDI.

Judging on how long it's taking, I'm guessing Sony was very early in the process when they announced it. As in, we know it's possible, and we know we can do it for the price point we think the market will spend.

That's it. To stave off Amira purchases.

Fine business strategy I suppose, but a little annoying.

Sony has not stated what frame rates ProRes & DNxHD will be able to go to, and they have not stated what resolutions they will support. They have also not stated how much this upgrade will cost.

If I'm not mistaken, recording over SDI is limited to 1.7 (1920x1080) correct? I believe (and hope) that internally the ProRes will record in 1.9 (2048x1080).

Our current Apple ProRes 422(HQ) is only enabled for 1920x1080, but I don't recall if the SDI output of the F55 is similarly limited. I do know that when outputting 4K over 4x HD-SDI or 2x 3G-SDI, the F55 can be set to output either 4096x2160 (DCI 4K) or 3840x2160 (UHD aka QHD).

Mitch,

Is there any discussion about a 3rd party connecting to the F55's dedicated connector for the AXS-R5. The data is there, doesn't it just take some trial and error to figure out what each pin is for and making a third party connector that pretty much performs like an R5 but on the 7Q

AND DENNIS - I know that the XQD is cheap, 64GB for 300 bucks, but 500GB for 1000(+/-) dollars on a 7Q is much much better value!
