Odyssey 7Q 4k Raw Burst Mode 120fps Playback Question

When I record using the Odyssey 7Q 4k Raw Burst mode at 120fps the playback is set to 29.97. I would like it to play back at 23.976 in Play mode on the Odyssey 7Q. Is there a setting to make this change on the Odyssey?

Also, when I load it into Davinci Resolve I can't get the dng frames to be read as 23.976. Is there any way to force Davinci Resolve to see the clips as 23.976?

Yup. setup>Project Rate> 23.98.

it's worth reading the manual some time. Loads of good info in there.

Hi Mitch,

Can you explain if there is a way to have clips recorded in the 4k 120fps burst mode playback in 23.98 instead of 29.97 on the Odyssey 7Q while in Play mode? I noticed there is an XML file with the recorded clip that has the settings: <input_rate> 29.97 </input_rate> and <project_rate> 29.97 </project_rate>. Is that setting what tells the Odyssey 7Q to playback at that rate?

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the response. I have read the manual. Might be something I am overlooking, but I doubt it.

I have it set to 23.976 in Resolve in Project Settings > Master Project Settings > Timeline Frame Rate and in Playback Frame rate. When I browse to the clip in in the Library the FPS is still displayed as 29.97 for each of the clips. I can't find a way to get those clips to be read as 23.976. If I drop them in the media pool it mentions that "The clips have a different frame rate than the current project settings." I click no and it still shows up as 29.97 in the 23.976 timeline.

I guess I am surprised that I may be the only one is encountering this issue.

The work around I have is to render each clip in their own timeline and in the deliver tab set Video > Render Timeline as: > Single clip. That way I can set the Frame Rate to 23.976. But if I have multiple clips in a timeline and I want to set Video > Render Timeline as: > Individual Source clips the Frame rate is greyed out and will render each clip at 29.97. I never had this problem before so I wonder if its based on the version of resolve I am using. I am using the latest version of Resolve 11.

Colin's suggestion is for changing the project rate on the Odyssey itself. Did you set the project rate on the Odyssey to 23.976? If you set your project rate on the Odyssey to 23.976, then all high-speed clips will be interpreted at that base frame rate. There is a chance the Odyssey's project rate was left on 29.97, so that's what it flagged the 120fps footage at.

As for fixing it in post, not sure about in Resolve, but in Premiere there is a "Modify > Interpret Footage" option when you right-click on a clip. Might be something similar in Resolve.

That's the process I told you about. You need to set the Odyssey Project rate (in the set up menu) from 'follows input' to 23.98. That sets all the XML and Prores file header information to the selected project rate. You should see that in the playlist information as well. If that's not happening then you it's a bug and you should raise a support ticket with Convergent Design.

irregardless it's easy enough to change the clip frame rate in Resolve as well. Just import it in the media pool (ignore the warning) then right click on that clip (or select a bunch of them and right click) on the pop up menu select: clip attributes > video > video frame rate > 23.98.

you'll find that in the Resolve manual as well. Page 142 ;-)

Colin,

Ok. Now I get it. The first time you mentioned the project rate I thought you were talking about a setting in Resolve. You were talking about on the Odyssey 7Q. :) All clear now and you answered both my questions. Thanks so much!

I've been thinking about hiding some Easter Eggs in there, like a treasure map or a secret website address, just to see if anyone notices.

I guess I must be one of the few who actually reads the manual then. Or at least I try. If I may make one suggestion, it is that Mitch spends more time on the manual (and maybe less time here?). My last three calls to support has been over typos or missing or faulty info in the manual. I don't mean to diss the manual, it's very well done! It's just that given the nature of the product, a recorder that works with everything between here and the moon, there's the inevitable situation that I have to promise to a client that a certain configuration will work based on the manual alone without having the whole set-up in front of me to test it. And that requires an unusual level of precision in the manual that other more narrowly focused products don't necessarily need.

Sorry to divert the thread.

Here's a suggestion to the question at hand: Apple's Cinema Tools can change the frame rate on Quicktime movies from 29.97 to 23.976. Not that Apple sells it anymore... but it can be had. :-)

Please feel free to send me any note on updates to the manual. Someone else does the Setup Guides, but I can still make sure to get the correct info in place.
