Odyssey 7Q 4K Compression

I'm starting to warm up to the CD 7Q especially after seeing Mathew Allards S-Log Test which looked amazing

This might seems like a trivial thing to worry about but is there going to be any type of SUN HOOD / shade for the 7Q? I know with my Small HD DP6 you cannot see a thing in bright sun without the excellent and well thought out Sun hood.

If it's trivial, then I'm right there with you worring about it. I submitted a question to CD and they said to expect sun hoods for the 7, 7Q provided by third parties.

Seems like if they had a Top mounting point it could be easy to make one up; but that's only if they had a top mounting point.

HFR, dude. Seems like high frame rates will only be available on Sony externally as 2K RAW bitstream.

So when we need slo-mo at, say, 240fps, we'll have to utilize 2K RAW...

Good point, however 240fps is currently lower-resolution, not full HD as stated by Sony. See the chart here: http://provideocoalition.com/awilt/story/high_speed_and_low_light_with_the_nex-fs700/
If 2K RAW after deBayering is lower resolution than internal AVCHD, that might explain some of the complaints. Too bad there's not a 10/12-bit RGB/YCC compressed option from CD.

Didn't Dan from CD state that they can probably rig it so the RAW will be converted into 10 bit 4:2:2 up to 60fps in a "Popular" codec? I'm pretty sure he said that or something along those lines; and yes, that would be cool.

Was referring to 240 fps... For the material I put on the internet, the right picture profile and AVCHD work great for slomo (really easy on the codec). Have been viewing my work via YouTube on my Apple TV (1080) and 52" HDTV- it looks better than what's coming down Netflix, Amazon Prime Streaming, etc. (in terms of picture quality due to lower compression). For internet delivery, the FS700 (AVCHD) and 5D3 RAW are plenty good. Now to write and shoot something really good- just gotta hit all the beats from "Save the Cat!" ;)

If you guys are looking for a cheap sunhood for it just fold up some black wrap and gaff it to your hood, no ugly velcro needed.

There's a discussion about the 2K being less than optimal in another thread. I wouldn't count on the 2K being done right until we see actual results. It is not a trivial task to deliver 2K raw from a 4K sensor at full field of view. If I was to bet, I'd bet that the 4K-to-1080p will look noticeably better than the 2K raw, but that is speculation at this point.

I'm not technically knowledgeable at all about cameras, but isn't the 5D3 RAW down res'd far more than the FS700 will be? I mean, isn't the 5D3 a 21 mega pixel camera? That's a huge drop down to HD res, and people with 5D3s seem to be happy with the RAW? Or is there a different process going on with the FS700?

Can't answer, don't know. But I can say that for a couple of years people were really happy with the recorded video from the 5D Mark II, even though it was soft and aliased to hell and back. Some people just couldn't see it, or didn't want to see it. Now, it's pretty much universally acknowledged, but at the time, people fought tooth and nail about it, proclaimed it to be indistinguishable from a Red One, etc.

So I haven't even looked at a 5D Mark III and know nothing about its raw and how it's derived.

Saw your interaction with him. He didn't say which external he used, but obviously not the 7Q as it is not released yet. But yes the S-log (PLUS Zeiss CP's and speedbooster) looks amazing, even if you just evaluate it on the basis of DR alone.

PS Subway is new thing in HK. Don't think they had it even a few years ago when I was there.
