Ode to JH

Gday All,

It's not been long since I made the big decision and sprung for the DVX...and I'd like to take this opportunity to thanks all those who have aided in my decision making. I tip my hat especially to JH - he's biased sure, but his conviction and description of the DVX "mojo" made my decision that much easier.

I've been struggling to achieve the "film look" - but I now think I have it.

Again, thanks John...

(ps, pls ignore poor lighting, bad acting, continuity issues, Vegas track overlay issue, audio - this test is only about the film look)

Haha

Yes. This does indeed have a lil Mojo in the visuals. I am glad to have inspired you. Some say I am biased or a fanboy; I say Im just committed.

(Nikes and Jumpsuits are in the mail)

I think it looks not bad, however, you need to understand having good lighting is also part of "the film look"

A nice job. A great camera - almost can't go wrong. Little bit of work on lighting etc (as you have noted) and your completely to the left of centre of it.

Ahhh, you're such a sweetheart John, so I've just gotta come clean. This was shot on my old, cheap, less than trusty JVC gr-dvx4 (irony right there). The XL2 arrived yesterday...and this footage was shot on my old camera last week as a learning exercise.

My buddy and I have been living and breathing filmmaking the past 6 months, and this site has been central to the learning process. The knowledge, character and goodwill of site is a credit to all of you. And I've enjoyed the banter between you and the XL2 boys - so I just couldn't resist.

Keep up the good work.

Steve

So this is what I get for being Superfly Cool Moe Dee. I get to the punchline? Suddenly I'm amusing.

No matter I didn't have the heart to tell you that it looked like ****. No matter I was just stoked for you and your new DVX100. No matter the Audio was horryfying, the overexposure levels on the face of the dude seated stage left, the squeezed frame, the Xl1'ish looking facial colors of the dude seated stage right and not to mention his clown pants.

All because I was stoked for you and your new purchase and didnt want to bash the 'first footage' No ****ing matter that I'm one of the few people on this site that actually welcomes the crappiest footage on the planet from peoples 'FIRST FOOTAGE EVER'.

And don't call me Sweetheart Nancyboy.

Yes. Strangely I do feel better.

As I sit here hopelessly trying to pull sweetheart's finger out of my arse (you saw how big that finger was), I'm comforted by the fact that Chris hasn't been so thoroughly owned since Quentin's first successful script was brought to the big screen.

And let the record show that those clown pants keep both of those actors warm at night.

Ucck. NO 'Sweetheart' really. Serious. (Heebee Jeebees)

You call that owned? I remember when getting owned actually meant something.

And let the record show that Walken executed his ass after that.

This thread is a mess.

This thread is awesome, AND that was a suckass thing to do, StMad.
I couldn't figure out why no one was talking about the aspect ratio or the chalkboard scraping quality of the sound.
If you have friends (or worse - hire actors) that wear pants like that for anyreason - warmth, stand out in crowd, warped fashion sense, whatever, we already know all we need to about your whackass judgment, which would account for your camera purchase. Enjoy your XL2, and the streching John's giant finger applied to your sphencter, because that's the best place for "that uncomfortable hunk of metal" (to referennce John's avatar) that you dropped 3.5K on.
You go, John -- big ups!

You're right about the aspect ratio jdanstan - I was playing with WME to keep it looking like the original file, but it just wasn't happening. The rest was all fixable with a bit of attention.

I was actually inspired by Sledgeweb's work (with 2 video tracks) that he posted elsewhere in this part of the world...it was seamless and did a great job of suspending disbelief. I'm getting excited by what can be done with NLEs with limited resources.
