Oddysey 7Q: Any 2K compressed options planned?

Hello,

This is primarily a question for Dan if he is browsing these forums, unless someone else knows this has been discussed elsewhere.

Will there be any 2K 4:4:4 compressed options for the FS700 + Oddysey 7q combo since the 2K should scale well from the 4K source? Any 2K compressed video would be, in theory, suffering from less artifacting than 2K RAW as it doesn't have to maintain the full sensor width as RAW data? This seemed to be the issue Adam Wilt was having with the 2K RAW on the R5 recorder.

Also, will we be able to see Cineform 2K 4:4:4 compressed or Cineform RAW 2K on this camera? This would result in drastically reduced file sizes and longer record times on the SSDs than Cinema DNG, although people can always convert to Cineform in post.

Thanks for your time, Dan, and for you very courteous and professional manner on the forums... it is a far more becoming public image than that of some CEOs who speak with an arrogant and conceited attitude; and has made me respect your company!

Sincerely,
Adam

Adam,

This has been mentioned as a possible future firmware update but it won't be day one.

I'm unsure about cineform, perhaps there are licensing issues. Cinema DNG is open source and fairly well supported. Both cineform and prores support 12 bit at the high level, but i don't believe 12 bit is the main target.

The main 4K target is 10 bit ProRes (with log encoding), if you record that and downsample in post you also get the chance to denoise before downsampling so actually you'd probably get a better image out of that then the recorder doing a 2K downsample itself.

Thanks Paul for taking the time to respond. I'm anxious to see this recorder get in more people's hands so we can see some real world tests. I'd really like to see how well the 4K keys hair for greenscreen, along with the same test in HD/2K 4:4:4.

The only thing we have to go on at the moment is a 4K ProRes sample file, with the brick building and fountain. I've looked at the file in detail and was very happy with the detail and quality in there. So it bodes well. More so than the 2K stuff i've seen.

It would be nice to see some more 4K stuff at some point tho!

cheers
Paul
