GH4 Odd experience using GH3 and GH4 for multicam shoot

I was sunny so I stoped down by 1 1/3 stops. both cameras were using Shutter priority (25fps). I was using the Nuteral profile. On the GH3 the footage was perfect. on the GH4 it was woverexposed. I was using manual focus on the GH4 and the other guy using auto focus (alough this should be erelevent).

Using any of the automated exposure modes you are almost working "blind" as far as exposure goes unless each shooter knows how to read exposure meter indications, how to interpret histograms, and knows the camera being used very well. In manual exposure mode with CONSTANT PREVUE set to ON the operator will at least see a "clue" in the viefinder (EVF especially) is exposure is much off.

Any of the automated modes will only show you what a "perfect" exposure will look like if the camera is able to achieve it.

That is not my experience. On the GH3 its seems to work verry well, and indeed in this case it did. Maybe it does not work for the GH4 which is a big step back. Idealy I would use full manual but in hectic run and gun situasions it is a godsend.

Were there ND filters on either of the lenses? If not, it's possible that the GH4 was stopping down to f22 and it was still too bright, and since the camera was set to Shutter Priority, it couldn't bring exposure down any more because the aperture can't close any more.

Looks like that "godsend" lost you footage on the GH4. I contend that CONSTANT PREVUE set to ON in full manual exposure mode would have shown you right off the bat that exposure was off and you could have saved the game right there.

I know "run 'n gun" can get quite hectic but in most of my professional still work we had no auto anything on the gear most of us used (Hasselblad, modular press cameras, Mamiya RB-67) so in trying to keep up with an event I got used to presetting exposure for ambient lighting whether I expected to shoot anything at the moment or not. Manual does not need to slow you down much once you're used to doing this.
