ocean view from every window

Charli

cool little "title"
We went to look at an apartment that boasted, "Ocean view from every window" and so when we get there, first thing we noticed this building is behind a building that faces the ocean, uh, what? So when we look around, the windows face, well, a building, the tops of buildings, sort of crummy. I asked about the ocean view and the landlord said,

"If you lean over and if you look BETWEEN those buildings, you can see the water."

@#$%& is all I have to say.

LOL, I remember when I was apartment hunting in LA. I looked at a place that was renting a room out for $600 in Culver City. When I got there I found out I would be renting a futon in the living room, and to top it off, I would be sharing that room with another person! Talk about rip off. I eventually found a place in Santa Monica (my own bedroom in a 2 bdrm 2 bath) for $750 incl. utilities. Go rent control!

Thats just classic. I remember when we went to view a 7 bedroom/ish house before. They said its got great potential, great condition for its age. Spectacular sea views of the coast. 4 Stories.

When we arrive there was a window hanging off 3 stories up. Everything was rotting away, damp ceilings and cracks through the walls. Part of the roof was off. Many things about it just sucked. Ended up going in auction for 180 Grand I believe.

Not exactly the same thing but i know what you mean, the house..agent..random people suck. Anyway Charli I thought you just moved, why were your looking for a house?

Ki-Ki - I am in a vacation rental at the moment looking for an apartment with a year lease. This vacation rental is 4 blocks from shopping area so it makes it really convient to go everywhere on foot. I think I've lost 5 pounds. I walk about 4-6 miles a day.

Oh, interesting. Clever plan you got there.

Wish you luck with finding the perfect apartment.

L O L. I got the same schtick as well. It was hilarious, because I outright said "Sorry, there's no ocean there. That's the highway." And the lady got mad.

However, the deal was better than anything else. I now live there.

Just walked past a new sign.. think it went up today at 1524 7th street in Santa Monica... pretty much 7th and Broadway. 1br, three doors down from Michael
Bay's offices and 4 blocks from the Prominade.

I yelled at a real estate agent once for showing me a "two bedroom" in bklyn, which was clearly a one bedroom they had just put a wall in to split the room up.

I think it's better in other parts of the country, but in NYC, realtors fall somewhere between pedophile and lawyer.

Another LA story here... I was looking for a 2-bdr in the hollywood area, simply because I love those old style bungalows from the 20's in LA.

Anyhow, I saw an ad on craigslist that said all the right things, and was supposedly newly renovated. I get there, and the place does look just painted. So I'm walking through the rooms, and everywhere I go - cockroaches scamper! In broad daylight! In the bathroom I look closely at the wall, and there are a couple of roaches stuck under the just sprayed paint (glossy wet-resistant paint). I ask the manager "what's up with the roaches, don't you spray for them?" and he goes "well, we do, but there's a restaurant down the street and they just keep coming over". You gotta understand, I'm phobic about roaches the way some folks are phobic about spiders. I got out real fast.

I go back to my car, and hit the road... about 3 minutes later, I see a roach running up my pant leg! AAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! Slammed the brakes, almost had an accident right then and there. I jumped out, called AAA. I had to make a lame excuse, but there was no way I was getting into that car - had them tow it to a carwash. I spent $100 to have it detailed. When I got home I took off my clothes, put them in a garbage bag, took a shower. Then I took the garbage bag out and threw it into a garbage bin 2 streets down. Result of apartment hunting for the day: $100 in the hole, and lost clothes.

Lesson is: don't stand and chat with anyone in a sea of roaches, not even for a few seconds, as roaches are liable to run up your leg and hitch a ride home with you.

Sheesh thats what you call a phobia. I hate roaches, but it just means that any I cross end up as mush on the ground.

Pfah.

Gramercy Place North. Hollywood. One bedroom apartment in a building with an underground parking garage.

$200/month.

That's rent control.

(Of course, that was also in 1990...who knows what's what now. :) )
