Oblivion

New, original sci-fi from the director of TRON: Legacy (which was his feature debut). Same cinematographer as well. Also, soundtrack is by M83.

I didn't like Tron: Legacy...And something about this I'm not responding to, despite some cool imagery. Story seems reminiscent of Wall-E. Interesting note, one of the writers on this, Michael Arndt, is writing the next Star Wars movie--

This looks amazing. I've watched the trailer several times. The visuals are absolutely gorgeous. Really, really nice design. Beautiful. The visual effects look so good. So, so good.

Similar to the Prometheus trailers, this just looks first class.

If the story is good, all the better.

The basis of the world is similar to Wall-E, I guess, if I squint. I definitely see the similarity to Solider. A lot of similarities. Luckily, I really enjoyed both of those films. The concepts aren't off limits, and I look forward to seeing what direction a new writer takes them.

I will agree that something seems off, but I think it could just be a poorly constructed trailer.

Please stop referencing a pixar robot love story in relation to a live action science fiction film starring Morgan Freeman. kthxbai.

Hehe.

Man I hope this is good... I was anticipating Prometheus more than any film of the past 10 years... the reality of that film was such a bummer.

Years ago I had this film idea... maybe somebody read it. This could be a spoiler if this similar to the actual plot... so I'll leave it in gray and let's see if it's close :)

"John" is an AE (alien exterminator), and one of the last men on earth. To have any chance against the aliens, and to survive the hostile environment, he wears a military developed tech-suit, but is he actually seeing the altered reality of a military conceived design?

Hint: John is one of many men who are... in reality... the heart of the most effective alien offense. Through his HUD he's rooting out alien strongholds and hide-outs... eliminating alien targets... but it's the real human survivors who are experiencing a horrific attack by this alien "machine". How do you get to the heart of the man... at the heart of the military machine... when all he sees (literally) are the last enemy threats of a world at war?

In camera FX are always the way to go if you can do it. Then go for ther VFX if it's just something you can't do in camera. Looks fantastic. Love the front projection.

I've always kinda felt this way. I think these days I'm burned out on a lot of digital effects. Then again, I've always loved miniatures and in camera effects. Something tangible lit and filmed is always better IMO.

This method of projecting the backgrounds on set seems like a great way to apply an old school idea (the funky old timey rear projection stuff) via new cameras and software.

MattinSTL: I like your sci-fi war movie idea. It feels like a horrific future video game with a Twilight Zone style twist at the end perhaps.

This article is a great read. The whole front projection in camera effect is so compelling. And to hear that they lit the scenes on that set simply predominantly with the natural light coming off those projected screens is so cool.

Given that it was shot in 4K, it has added to me wondering, where is content going to come from for all these 4K panels and projectors that we keep hearing are poised to command the market when the biggest of the big films like this or The Hobbit are still mastering to 2K?

I suspect the adoption of 4K distribution won't be nearly as fast as some think.

Hope not. Those are usually really bad stories. It's just a giant dues ex machina. Oh, it was all a dream! thanks for watching.

I really don't mind those things that much as long as they're pulled off effectively. (I kinda liked Vanilla Sky...and others of it's ilk)

This flick looks visually stuning to me. Just bugs me that the laws of physics don't seem to apply much in the future. (not to mention I'm sure there's a good reason why you'de put your home on top of a 3k foot tall stick?)
