This devastating fire has already claimed many victims. The event was held in an unsafe space that completely ignored code violations and was done with no permits or safeguards. Many artists and artistically inclined people live and work in lofts that are often not zoned for residential purposes.
Sadly, this is yet another reminder that whatever activity one is involved in - a show, a concert, or shooting a film, it is incumbent upon everyone, especially the organizers or person in charge, to be extremely aware of the risks, and to understand the tradeoffs involved. This is quite apart from working without needed permits and insurance - just because you have a permit and insurance does not absolve you from responsibility for your safety and the safety of the people you are working with. It is easy to think "I'll just take the risk", because you've done it dozens of times without things going wrong - but we should always keep in mind that all it takes is that one time things do go wrong.
My thoughts are with the victims and families in this tragedy.
