O...M...G I love the internet

Man I love it when a new social invention comes along. This one is in its beta stage and looks friggin jaw-dropping awesome. Basically it's an idea porn has been exploiting for awhile and here it's been applied to (for the most part) more intellectual pursuits.

Basically it works on a 10 minute token system and the tokens are bid-on items. So John Adams is a big movie producer in Hollywood, Jan is a marketing research analyst, Bob is a top tier real estate speculator -- you bid on their tokens, and each token is worth ten minutes of their time. Obviously if you're just wanting to talk to your favorite cosplay model that's there too, but I think this could be one of the better tools to really get valid, first hand knowledge about a given pursuit. I'd be shocked if this doesn't turn out to be huge.

Love it.

I signed up! :D It's gonna be awhile I think before high profile folks start flocking to the site. But I bet people like Kholi and Barry and Zak could start utilizing the site straight away. I just made a profile for fun. I don't know how to explain much beyond how to animate in flash. lol But hey! Maybe someone will want to know that exact thing -- and from me.

Thanks so much for sharing. Some great social media people here that I can hopefully get some worthwhile advice from!

Yeah, the only issue (if it is one) is that I'm hoping that this eventually turns into real currency.

Right now it's in the beta stage so it doesn't look like the tokens are valued at anything. My hope is that they'll eventually have a system where you actually are purchasing 10 minutes of people's time based on a bidding system.

We'll see!

'Kay -- just want to keep expanding on the awesome that is allthis.

Basically what they've done is taken the combined databases of facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter and have turned them into a searchable database based on the profile owner's profession or skillset (so long as they're a member). So for instance if I searched for "blonde model chicago" or "cinematographer chicago" or "loan officer chicago" or "gardener chicago" or "make-up artist chicago", unlike google or something I'm being pointed directly to that person's profile and am seeing their bio, popularity, reviews, etc in an instant. Then if it's just a question I'm looking to get answered or if it's something more like I'm looking to interview someone or set up a meeting with them for potential work -- I have it all right there. I can even then connect with them via my social networking channels.

To me this is what social networking has really been lacking -- a searchable database of professionals on FB, LinkedIn and Twitter all in one spot. Once it takes off I think it will be the be all end all in social networking searches.

Can I just buy ten seconds to tell someone how I really feel about them...and do they HAVE to listen?

lol

Okay -- found out more awesome, and also how real *currency* works here.

Basically it's a non-profit. You have to choose your charity then you can convert your tokens to monies that are donated to your charity of choice. Unfortunately because they're in California most of the charities are from there. I ended up choosing Filmmaking for Animals, INC.

So, basically, when you hit 135K in tokens, you cash those in and $100 is donated to your charity. I'm assuming if you ever actually *paid* for tokens (which you can) it's tax deductable.

The highest donation denomination, I think, is $500. Still, $500 to basically do what you're doing on facebook anyway is pretty neat. And, like I said, the value is really in the ability to search for people who might have answers or services that you're looking for.

I love it! :D

My only area of expertise is "Why Mountain Dew is better than Mello Yello." Think anyone will need that kind of advice?

The question I have......is how is that ten minutes given? Chat on FB? Telephone call? In Person? Email?

It's definitely "early BETA" Connection to the server keeps timing out.
