Hi All,

I would like to mention that the new trailer for our upcoming sci-fi indy feature "NYDENION" is now online:

With way over 1900 shots and way over 500 pure VFX shots this is a hefty and heavy Fusion pipeline job orgy. Simply every single shot went through Fusion and Generation. We still have some way to go, but we already see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Be informed:

This movie was started nearly 15 years ago as an indy film project. Jack Moik had the idea when he was working as model maker for some movies in the late 90's (real models) and thought of this movie to be made. Over years many were involved in model shop and live action shooting (most of the stuff about 10-5 years ago using a Sony VX9000 with interlaced letterboxed PAL).

As it turned out it won't be possible to do the required compositing post production and VFX "via Internet", where Jack tried to put together a team. As Jack joined us at Magna Mana he had the project with him and it was in more or less calm stage, frozen in some kind of inability to finish it as expected.

We encouraged each other to try to finish it, so the editing and shooting was mainly finished, additional digital sets and models were began etc. Lucky as we were we got some funding from "Hessen Invest Film" (somewhat less than 200,000 Euros), a local funding bank fond, where the jury members got so excited about that "long term indy production story" that we are now able to finish that indy sci-fi opera in roughly 6 months with local talents and our own staff. As it turned out a small, but very powerful, productive and dynamic team...

So please have these facts in mind when watching the trailer and don't just compare it to the last multi-million dollar features. Watch it and think of your own what you consider the value of this. And have a calm minute for those who had to roto hours of greenscreen DV footage... :)

The trailer is in german, but you can have english subtitles on in youtube.

There is also an HD version online. We will have a native english version pretty soon.

Lonely Seal Releasing will be the world wide distributor of the movie.

Honestly we need every support for this soon-to-be-released feature.

So if you like it, please forward it to others and spread the word - this is the best help you can give to us. The more see it and like it, the better success the movie will have.

Please subscribe to our mailing list, or follow us on Twitter, Facebook etc.

Look at the website for some more details, and especially the funny behind the scenes diaries.

Any feedback is highly welcome :)

We think this is probably one of the cheapest and possibly at the same time most complex indy features ever made.

Best wishes,

Axel

Looks cool - can definately feel a star wars and alien influence, but I'd like to see how this turns out. Keep up the good work

Wow. Some really nice sci-fi imagery there. I'd love to see this feature. Are you planning on releasing a DVD or Blu-ray in the near future? I'd love to see some behind-the-scenes on how you approached your model/miniatures work. I'd like to tackle some projects in the future using those methods in place of digital effects, or in conjunction with some minimal digital effects (digital matte paintings or minor model touch ups, and of course standard composites). I just love the old school look of real things shot by the camera.

Anyways, congrats on finishing this big project.

I think this could be a Sy-Fy show. You should try to see what can happen shopping it around if it doesn't have distribution yet. This is too good to not go anywhere.

by the way what was the majority of this shot on since you said some early parts were shot on an old camera (I forget the name).

And to clarify, did you say this project got funded with $200,000 EUROS? Just curious ...

Hi All,

to answer some of your questions:

Yes, we are looking into distribution. Thats one of the reasons we have that team premiere shortly, as we have invited some distribution people too. And we are in contact with some more.

And clearly there will be a BluRay and DVD release at some point. If we could make it to the theaters before that - showing it on a big screen - we will do that first, clearly. Nonetheless, this is for sure a collectors item for anyone interested in SciFi movies.

The team was quite small given the "size" of the movie. We will come up with a number chart when its done (that for sure will shock ourselfs the most).

Most of the live action was originally shot like 5-10 years ago at the - at that time famours - Sony VX 9000 DV-CAM. So we got PAL, interlaced, letterboxed to 16:9 = 216 lines vertical resolution on motion, 432 in still moments. We found a magic way to up-rez that to HD. Its clearly not as sharp as HD, but its far better than we expected. We need to be honest with you.

And one thing for sure: The trailer and teaser are just small pieces of the entire movie. There is so much more in it, live action, dialogs, and clearly VFX sequences. We did by far not fire out all we have in the movie - not even a reasonable percentage. So stay tuned... If not yet mentioned: Its feature length, ie. 1.5 hours of fun to watch.

You can find a lot behind the scenes stuff aleady on the official website, which is

www.nydenion.com

And yes, we got some funding of less than 200,000 Euros just to fulfil the post production, which means

- doing the final editing
- building some real models
- building some sets
- shooting stunts
- shooting a few missing live action scenes, or replacing some worsed ones
- building a post pipeline with lots of automation
- making tons of 3D models (beside the real ones used)
- making 3D virtual sets
- making hundrets of matte paintings (you will be amazed)
- roto scoping all that green screen shots (many many many hundrets)
- making 3d animations
- compositing (the biggest part of the whole thing, beside roto)
- color grading
- voice over
- sound fx
- sound mix
- ... (I surely forgot a bunch of it)
- pay tons of freelancers

If you have any idea of post production such a project, you understand that the funding has helped, but hardly pay the value generated.

We think that Nydenion may very well be the most ambitious indy film project yet accomplished (well, we are not yet fully done, some few weeks to go).

So, friends of SciFi - spread the word!

Follow us on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, whereever.

The more hits we get there, the more likely we can bring this into a theater near you. And clearly to your home theaters :)

Best wishes,
Thank you so much for this heads up!

Hi!

Well, I forgot at least the motion control shootings we did. Real models require real cameras to fly their way - repetively.

See the behind the scenes stuff on our website.

Cheers,
Axel
