NYC on DVX

Just got my DVX after weeks of looking at all the clips in this thread, so I felt it would be proper to post my own results, playing around on a Sat. morning, going for the urban, washed out look. The camera is definitely as good as I thought it would be and better!

Re: NYC on DVX

I like the blue'ish look you got.

Was it 24p - what settings etc ?

Is it the dvx100 or dvx100a ?

Actualy is the dvx100a even out yet over there in the states ?

Re: NYC on DVX

DVX100
24P normal
gamma - cine-like
matrix - cine-like
chroma level 0
chroma phase 0
detail 0
master ped 0
thin
balanced for tungsten light, shot at sunrise, some shots blatantly overexposed

Re: NYC on DVX

very nice.
good to see how the DVX can be pushed and yet delivers the good.

Re: NYC on DVX

Hey Lobot,

Any chance of getting internet compression settings ?
Ie: sorenson /qt/mpeg4 etc etc.

I still have'nt got my head round how to get a good quality clip up - like yours & others posted.???

I have cleaner/fcp /compressor/etc & am mac based.

Cheers

Re: NYC on DVX

sure cane,

i outputted from fcp 4--->using compressor. from compressor, i used quicktime, using jpeg compression at medium (to keep size low) it seems to outperform the sorenson and mp4 methods.

the clip was shot with the regular dvx100. i don't think the 100a is out yet here in the U.S.

Re: NYC on DVX

lobot, you know i'm a fan of this clip, i just think that the compression / decoding is actually not the best... you have there 15fps and a too high data rate. the quality doesn't justify the weigh (29.9MB)
now, i must say that i'm also in the learning curve of "the art of decoding", but from my experience i find mpeg4 to give the best results comparing to weight.
try this:
export to quicktime from fcp, chose your native fps (24 for NTSC), millions of colors and keep this rule to calculate bit rate:
width (pixel) x height x fps divided to 48,000.
the bitrate should be no less than half of the sum, and no more than double.
i learned this rule from a tutorial of sorenson, though it worked perfect also for normal mpeg4.

if you follow this workflow, you should get this specific clip in a much better quality and down to... around 16MB. you can even try a larger frame.

let us know ;)

p.s.
i've just watched the clip again.. is the 15fps done on purpose? it's actually a nice effect when i think about it..

Re: NYC on DVX

shai, actually it wasn't done on purpose, i was just kind of clumsy.

anyway, i am not following you here -

width (pixel) x height x fps diverted to 48,000
where you say diverted, i don't understand what you mean, or how.  do you mean divided by 48,000?  i tried this method, using 'divided by 48,000' and i get this:
(518x269x30)/48,000 and i get 87, which makes a poor image. so i tried several other bitrates - 1,000kb/s gave me a great picture, but at 90mb.  then i tried 500kb/s, which gave me a slightly worse picture than you saw, but at 48mb.
so, i'm sort of lost using the mpeg4. any help?

edit: ok, i'm on track. i was using mp4 compression under the .mov extension rather than .mp4 so now i used 1400 kb/s, but the image of the original is still slightly better than an mp4 file at 18mb size. i like the 15fps. it cuts out on most of the artifacting/pixillation.

Re: NYC on DVX

hmm.. divided.. sorry.. my english
you should go no more than 160kbps (about two times 87) in 25 fps using the .mov extension.
you say it's a poorer image.. ?

Re: NYC on DVX

yes, definitely poorer that way. using .mov with mpeg 4 at a bitrate of 500 was still not as good. later tonight i'll post some results at a bitrate of 150 so you can see what i mean.

Re: NYC on DVX

shai,
please take a look at this if you can. it is the same clip, but as quicktime with mpeg4 codec, 29.97fps, with a bitrate of 150, 518x269 pixels.

I would like to get the better quality clip with lower file size you speak of, but for some reason it looks like this. Any idea why?

Re: NYC on DVX

hey lobot
i'm not at home (and forgot my details to log in with my regular username :P )... i also can't watch the new clip in this internet caffe.. anyway, thanks for re-decoding and everything, i'll watch it in two days when i'm back..
meanwhile, if someone has an idea, i guess we could all learn something.. .

Re: NYC on DVX

(back home..)
ooh you're right.. doesn't look so good.
that was at least my experience with this (it's this "der besuch" trailer which i've already posted here):
http://homepage.mac.com/shailevy/camera/presentderbesuch.html

it doesn't have this pixel artifacts that i see in your clip.. and it made the same way (or was it?!)

are you sure you chose "millions of colors" and "best quality" ?

Re: NYC on DVX

Hi Shai,

I have a Mac hompage also - but I want to get the same size screen as you - how do you set it up for that size ? also your web page seems different - to what you can choose from in the imovie templates ?

I have compressed one fcp project using QT settings for mpeg 4 & put it in the movie folder of my idisk.
I then set up the movie page & choose a template - but it is much smaller than yours & I can't seem to find an option to design a page - like yours ?

I just want to up load a 4 min music promo done with the dvx100 - I dont care if its just a white blank page with a QT movie playing - if you have some instructions on how to do this & also a good encoding workflow - I would greatly appreciate it.

By the way your trailer is the most inspiring piece I have seen on DV - it was your piece that made me go out & buy this wonderful cam, the very next day.

Cheers for any help.

Re: NYC on DVX

hey carrington,
i use my idisk just to host my own home-page. i've never used this silly theatre templets.. (sorry.. i didn't like it so much).
basically, anything you put in your idisk, in the "sites" folder, has an accessible address (i.e url).

it will always be: http://homepage.mac.com/your_member_name/the_file_name

you can just throw your .mov quicktime into this folder, and it will show as quicktime player on default white background.

don't use capital letters, numbers and spaces in the file name.

idisk is not the best web hosting, but since i pay for this .mac thing and get my 100MB included, i can't afford to have another hosting service. it's doing its job though, not always the best bandwidth, but good enough for me, meanwhile..

Re: NYC on DVX

Hi Shai,

Thanks for those helpful hints ;)

Could I trouble you for a basic workflow from getting your project encoded for the web from fcp 4 ?

I have compressor & QT obviously but I also have cleaner 6 - so what is the best method to get my project up on the net looking as good as yours ? :)

Cheers again ;)

Re: NYC on DVX

you're welcome!
i listed this workflow right in this thread, which worked for me (not for lobot though) with mpeg4 and all that.
don't know cleaner 6...
sorenson gives a lot of smart decodings for quicktime. there's a "pro" version too that costs money. if you get one and need the tutorial, i can send it to you. you need to learn some basics, but then it should work the best.
check the trailers section at the quicktime homepage, almost all of them were made with sorenson.

Re: NYC on DVX

Hi Shai,

Thanks again for all the info.

I have been looking at my homepage to try & figure out how to get text & a title up there also but I can't seem to find the details on how to do this.

Your page has a black background with a nice simple title etc - where in the setting up for a site can I do this ?
If I click on the sites section - it gives me some templates for a web page header but , how do I then insert a QT mov on there.

Sorry for troubling you on this tedious web stuff - I am glad I can at least have a bigger screen on a page thanks to you ;)
But I might as well do it properly since, apple charges me also.
Is it possible to have more than one of these web pages ie:
, could I upload a few different movies - each with its own page ?

Cheers :)

Re: NYC on DVX

this black background and simple text is called "html" :D you can compose simple pages like mine really easy and embed a quicktime into it.
nothing too difficult... i learned how to do it in 2 hours.
but hey.. we're in a DVX forum.. if you need some tips in html go to an html forum :) or just drop me an email shailevy@mac.com
meanwhile get yourself "html creator" for mac.
