Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I have had the chance to shoot any shorts and post anything but for those of you who enjoyed the film I shot/edited for the last Vancouver 48hr Horror Film Festival called "Devotion" that I posted here on DVXUser before, then I hope you all will enjoy the short I shot this past weekend even more entitled, "Number 6" for this year's Vancouver 48hr Horror Film Festival. My positions on this film were DP/Op/Editor/SoundMixer.

The theme we were given this year was "Good becomes Evil" and the prop we were given to use that was to be incorporated was a regular metal key.

This film sounds great, especially with a nice sub-wolfer and sound system so don't be shy on the volume level!

Anyway, without further ado, I would like to present to you:

"Number 6"

This is right my alley in terms of visual look and style.. I quite enjoyed it..

very well done... especially for a a 48 film fest.

awesome. Nice coloring, what did you use for that? the short film kept my attention the whole time, I kinda wish the girl would had die more gruesomely! The tension was there, and I almost didn't want to see what was gonna happen next.... I'd to be on par with your skillz one day.

awesome work.... looking forward to see more.. nice site...

Dude How Did You Get That Look. Was It Magic Bullet. And How Did You Get That Cool 16 Grain. I Would Love To Know I Want That Light Grain For My Short. Great Job On It. One Of The Best Things I Have Seen On Dvx User

I was wondering where you went off to.

Just when I think I am the only person who is a fan of the Macabre arounf here; you go and turn in this piece. Then again, you also turned in Devotion and that was really out there in a cool way; I like that you are an entertainer. You seem more concerned with entertaining the audience than most of the prententious bullshit that comes around.

I liked this short. It had some nice shock and awe and was disturbing. Your photography on this was extremely well done; crisp and properly exposed. You and the Director seemed to be on the same page as I was really enjoying the compositions and framing. The overhead shot that went 'backwards' was disorienting but really enhanced the dynamic atmosphere. I also really enjoyed the comps that had an extreme justification of right or left and the 2 Point aspect ratio was engaging cinematically. The use of what I presume was a crane or jib was flawless; perfectly executed.

I loved it. Simple, atsmopheric and creepy. But like a trainwreck you just have to look. I can personally do without Black and White as not many films have sold me on it; Schindlers did, Ed Wood did but it kind of removes me me and reminds me of it being 'photographed'. No matter; that's purely subjective.

Bravo to you and the crew. It really felt pro.

That was pretty freaky! Very good horror, hope it did well at the festival. Should win some sort of cinematography award.

Loved the jib transition shot. You guys are getting good use out of that storage room.

Having her start to hum along was real creepy. Bet you guys scared the **** out of some people at the festival! Good stuff.

The cinematography, editing, and sound are all top notch. Really like the look and feel you accomplished with this. Very creepy little flick.

Hey!

Thanks everyone so far for your comments and compliments.

To JOHN HUDSON: Thanks for your detailed comments! You've always been a great person for criticism. However, I just wanted to note that this film wasn't in black and white! It's strange however because I sent my parents the link and they also thought it was black and white. On the Sony production monitor, my LCD screen, and on a 100" theather projection system I have in my apartment, it had color! However, it's not a lot of color. I tried to achieve a "skip bleach/bleach bypass" look here but with subtle colour and maroon reds for blood instead of anything bright. The skintones were supposed to be pale, and I added a hint of bluish/green tone to most of the shots along with the skip bleach desaturated/high contrast look. I hate monitor variances! I wish everyone could watch it the way it was meant to be watched :)

To RONIN FILMER: I tried to achieve as much look "in-camera" as much as possible and did some additional desaturation in Vegas...as well as some contrast boosting and brightless lowering. Some hints of green were added using Vegas's simple colour correction tools. The light grain was simply part of the original DVX footage when transferred to computer. I made some additional changes to the film since I last posted it this morning so I will post that one up later...but nothing serious.

Thanks again everyone!

Thanks for the headsup on the B + W perception Norm; I just watched it again; this time on my home 17" Flatscreen and I can see that it is now some desat but most definatley in color and NOT black and white. I'll check it tommorow from the office and see what I was trippin on.

Now I like it even more.

Hey John!

Thanks for sitting through the film another time to check if there's color! :) Let me know what it looks like on the office monitor tomorrow. I am always really nervous about these monitor variances when showing people, especially when I am so particular about colour, shadows, and highlights.

Wow. Now that is some dark stuff ... but very well shot. I especially love those camera moves ... but why did I have to watch this before I went to sleep? :(

Watched this again Norm; from my first viewing, and I should have been a little more clear on this, it appeared to have moments of Black and White. I did not state this above; I never felt the entire film was in Black and White but just certain elements. Now, I can see that there simply small portions that are desaturated with muted colors that made me see this.

Anyway, looks great! Love it!

This is my kind of stuff. I am shooting a thriller STASH now, and have some similar imagery involved. Very nice look, loved the bleached look. This is my favorite on the site so far. Yuu definatly have a good eye, can't wait to see more. Thought about doing a feature around this story?

The nice thing about this short was that I had 100% complete total control over the style, framing, color, camera movements, etc. They just said, "Do your thing man.. you're the DP!"

I like working with those kind of directors where they have total trust in me to do my job...that's why I was able to be so creative with the shots on this film.

It's funny, but it seems like you directed it. There really is no dialogue, besides the little song, and it was all about atmosphere. Not to cut down on what your director contributed, but this piece definitely has your signature written all over it.

Haha... that's funny :)

This film has my signature all over it? Sweet...:)

Oh, CTV National News chose our crew out of the 22 crews to shoot for tonight's CTV news. They came last night to film us shooting behind the scenes and some interviews. It will be on at 6:55PM Vancouver time...if anyone wants to tune in!

Tomorrow is the screening and winner announcements... I'm excited!

Good luck. Although I don't think you'll need much "luck" ... that's seriously some very good work. Regardless of the outcome, you should be proud. (Easy for me to say, eh? :) )
