NTSC version for PAL land?

Hi,

This is my first post here and want to first of all say thanks to everyone for supplying the well of info! I'm living in PAL Germany and looking to buy a DVX. I'm not sure if I should by it in PAL or NTSC flavour. After reading through many pages I've found several posts about whether PAL or NTSC is better in NTSC land, but haven't found any about the opposite. The PAL version of the DVX only comes with 50i and 25p. So is this a big disadvantage when converting to film? Would it be better to buy an NTSC version and deal with not being able to play it directly on the TVs here for the added coolness of 30p and 24p or am I just being paranoid?

Thanks,

dan't

Re: NTSC version for PAL land?

Think about the resolution difference PAL - NTSC, your other equipment and where you live when you use it on the commercial way! Yes, yes, you can convert it but you lost at least one generation.

Re: NTSC version for PAL land?

For PAL users, the PAL camera is the one to get. Film for television gets shot at 25fps all the time in PAL territories.

Re: NTSC version for PAL land?

Thanks for your responses. My end formats would be DVD, online streaming and some PAL video and maybe film conversions. So does that mean that when I convert to film, there would be a slight slowing down and pitch drop? And what about DVD. I haven't worked with this at all. Is there a 25p format for DVD?

I suppose my questions reveal my dilletantism. Up until now, my agency has been working mostly in print, online and multimedia, but we are getting increasing calls for video, so we want to get more into it. We'll be using Apple's production suite for post production work, with which we have some small experience already.

...moreover, I'd give a dollar to anybody who can tell whether footage was 24 or 25P, without a side-by-side comparison.

Well, I won't really give a dollar, but you get the picture :D

Re: NTSC version for PAL land?

I just wanted to add one thing, so people don't just think I am being a fanatic. In Germany they actually show commercials before the movie in cinemas. Not just trailers, but real beer commercials etc. My friends in America never understand this. But actually they are often of a very high quality and anyway I'm in the advertising business so I can't complain.

So the point is, it is likely that we would be transferring to 35 mm film. That is why I'm asking about this. That is, are we okay transferring from 25p tape to 24fps film?

Re: NTSC version for PAL land?

Yes, you should have no problem tansfering to film from PAL 25p. that was the prefered meothod before the DVX came about. As far as commercials in the theater, don't worry, they have started infiltrating the american theaters as well. I Personally think it's a bunch of bull to have to watch the same commercials I see on TV for something I just paid $8.50 to watch.

As do many of us. However, IINM, there was a lawsuit over this, and I think the theaters lost, so the new policy is: no commercials after "showtime". They can show all the commercials they want prior to the stated showtime, but if you're there for a 7:50 p.m. show, then starting at 7:50 there are no commercials allowed. (except for previews, of course, which are nothing but commercials for upcoming movies...)
