NTSC & PAL Issues

Hi to everyone,

Probably I'm gonna buy my GH1. In Turkey, eventhough all Canon-Nikon products are sold everywhere, GH1 isn't directly sold in a Technology Market etc. A seller imported GH1 from USA.

In addition, Turkey has been located at PAL region. Presumably the camera coming from USA will be NTSC. Hereby my question is: Can I have a chance to record PAL on USA version of Panasonic GH1?

Not currently. Maybe in a firmware update, but that is speculation.

Right now the NTSC GH1 only shoots NTSC.

Hopefully that will change.

Ups. Please forgive me but I didn't understand.

If I buy it can't I use this NTSC version of GH1 in Turkey? I mean, I'm planning to make a serious documentary movies and music videos with it. Can't I show them on a TV channel or something like that?

You can always use the camera whereever... it's just when you attempt to display directly from the camera, to a PAL display, it will not work(*).

However, most people I presume in this forum are working with the following workflow.

Shoot video, using the camera as a camera, log and transfer video to NLE, edit video, output video.

I think it would be better if you always shot in 24p. The difference between 24 fps and 25 fps is 4%, and 'film' shot at 24 fps is frequently run at 4% faster for 25 fps in PAL regions. (I'm ignoring the 23.976 business...).

*That assumption refers to the old days of SD. I don't know what the effect of using the HDMI connection of a nominally NTSC camera hooked up to a HDMI based PAL display.

No, please NO. That's the worst advice I've seen here.

Anybody intended to use a video camera professionally in a PAL country really should have one capable of 25p / 50i /50p. Shooting 24 for 25 is not really feasible in a daily workflow, that's a whole different ballgame than retiming one single short or feature. Then comes the matter of electric power running at 50Hz which means that with the NTSC model you'll always get into trouble with flicker under fluorescents and streetlights.

Why not order the PAL model from a European country? You can even get it from UK and Holland resellers without the kit lens if that's not of interest for you.

No doubt about it. But the original poster didn't indicate they were choosing between PAL or NTSC, they indicated just NTSC from the US.

I think one should wait up to March... PMA is in Feb last week.....and.. Rebel T2i (aka 550D) is out....the first sign of real competition.....
