NTSC only deck plays back PAL and records it?! Whats happening here?

Hello everyone,

Im knocking my head on the wall over here, although Im sure Ill shoot myself after someone explains this to me. I have a Sony GV-D1000 deck that will playback a PAL tape, ofcourse it only shows on its LCD and wont send a signal to an NTSC monitor. Now if I connect the deck to an NTSC Sony PD-170 (which plays back the PAL tape on its LCD too) I can actually dub a PAL tape from one to the other through firewire. It seems to work fine.

(Anything wrong up to this point?)

If not, how is this working? And more importantly, why doesnt the following work: Record to the deck from a PAL timeline through firewire. What is the difference here? It seems that both methods would be sending PAL signals through a firewire cable...no?

Thanks in advance and also thanks to Tommy at EVS for helping me with my new DVX purchase!

Just dubbing from one tape to the other? Pretty sure that's just digital transfer, no intervention by the deck/cam at all, so the tv standard wouldn't matter.

Ah. Thank you. Yes thats what I thought. But whats keeping the deck from recording a digital transfer, as you say, from a PAL timeline? Whats different there?

Hmmm....no idea.

On the other hand, maybe it *is* recording it to the tape, but you can't see it because the player's system can't play it?

But the player can playback PAL tapes that I have dubbed via the (NTSC)Deck>firewire>(NTSC)Camera way. But why wouldn't (PAL)timeline>(NTSC)deck work?

Just dubbing a tape, no matter what the system, shouldn't involve any broadcast standard for the transfer.

Printing to tape? It sounds like the deck is expecting an NTSC signal, rather than just a digital transfer.

But I'm just guessing here.
