I gotta say the effects scheme is way inconsistent. The BadTV look and the lens flares and smoke are totally contradictory. It's like, go grimy and hard, or go glossy and big money, or do both and look like an indecisive mofo with an overall vibe of fake. On the positive side, better than most noob videos that try to use every filter in the folder, and some slick transitions and nice cuts, like the strobing money counter at the end for example.

First, I'd to say thanx for taking the time out to watch the video & also to provide an in depth critique & analysis as well. Second, it's all your opinion so I won't argue with that. But what I would like however for you to clarify your explanation of the whole using the mixture of lens flares, the bad tv effect & the smoke are contradictory, in relation to the big money glossy look vs. the grimey look. Is there a secret rule I don't know about. or something lol. Also the overall vibe of fake explain what did you mean by that. But again thank you for the feedback.

Here's my problem with the video. First of all why do you have two startup screens with basically the same information?

Second when the video "finally" drops when you are introducing the rappers their name scrolls by way to fast, you should have slowed it down or froze the frame because as it is now you can't really tell.

Now the biggest problem I see with this video is the format, I don't know if it's the way that site is hosting the video or the way you shot it but it looks stretched and in your face in a very unnatural way. Maybe it's because of the SD format being up converted or the way you framed the shots, I don't know but it actually made me motion sick. Also would have liked to have some more camera angles + some wide shots, that's the main reason I hate recording indoors because you can never get those really wide shots that look beautiful.

The green screen and effects are cool, not the best but good job. You do have a nice and tight edit so that's a real plus. Also you did VERY GOOD on the lighting, excellent job on the lighting.

Overall I would like to know if you shot this on a DVX with some kind of adapter or something, because something about the image just does not look right?

Please post the tech specs when you get a chance

Yeah the 2 startup screens are for 2 different sources, the first one is for more how can I say it professional tv channels ala mtv etc, who'll take that info & format it as they see fit, the second one is the standard that would be used on youtube local access channels websites etc.

yeah names are moving to the pace of the audio saying the names said to the beat, so that was intentionally done

yeah format, is how the website converted it , for example I have a private youtube link, exact same file upload, and its not streched out like that, not stretched to the point where its a huge deal, i think the website asks you to put it in square pixels, I put it in something else for youtube purposes, so it must have to do with its conversion

also i had wider shots, the main camera was an hvx, but i had a hard drive failure and lost most of my footage, this was pieced together with 55% of the footage which was primarily close ups & medium shots, which hey whatever cant rewind time, when your primary hard drive & 2 backups fail, thats just dumb luck lol.

Again green screen is the same thing, lost most of the best green screen footage, which changed the whole direction of the video so just dropped in a couple effects for spice.

lighting was good, but it also was a combination of in camera settings lighting positioning, color treating etc to get it most optimal. But it was lite by amazing photographer who served as my cinematographer and dp. Thats like his third or fourth video period but hes coming into his own.

Shot with a str8 up DVX, but i think u kind of expressed some of the issues u had so maybe between the formatting & kind of closeness in shots maybe thats just burdening you too much ha ha.

But nonetheless thank you for your comment, as well as feedback, I love it when people give their actual critiques on things, no matter good or bad.
its also good to get different perspectives from other people, because if your a director, that doesnt mean your the worlds greatest dp, editor, cinematographer, grip, camera operator etc, so its good to hear an array of feedback

Thank you, video looks professional I just think if you would have not lost your footage and had those wide shots it would have been better IMO.

Regardless good job and keep making these movies, great work!

I totally agree but this video has a loooooooooooooooooooooongggggggggggggg history of having problems, its good to finally get it out. Its not the end all be all. I'm shooting 20 music videos by October anyway, so this is a good start.

To me the BadTV contributes to a grimy, degraded look, which I'm a big fan of in general. If you had wanted to go further with that, you could have desaturated the images, added some static and additional distortion, and gone for that lo-fi Cloverfield vibe (camerawork aside). On the other end of the spectrum you've got your flares and smoke, amp that up and transition with flashes and lens flare wipes, add more AE lights with those Optical Flares on them or whatever effects package you have, add some haze and smoke if you've got the stock footage and it seems necessary...you already had a lot of smoke. I felt that the look wasn't consistent and that distracted me from just watching the video, making me more aware of the technical stuff--but you're also working with a pretty horrible song (been there) and I'm in the middle of greenscreen project myself, not really happy with it, so you could attribute the "fake" judgment at least partially to my feelings about my own project.
