Now It Goes Sony F3 vs C300

- The F3 can shoot in variable frame rates from 1 to 60p and after 30p resolution drops from 1920x1080 to 1440x1080.

I've never heard this before and as far as I know it's not correct.
I've only ever heard of the F3 doing 60P in 720 mode (just like the C300).

Someone out there with more F3 experience correct me if I'm wrong.
I would love to be wrong because it would make the F3 that much cooler.... but as far as I know you're limited to 1-30fps in 1080.

The PMW-F3 offers up to 1080 30p for *internal* recording to SxS cards in XDCAM-EX.

However...
The PMW-F3 *also* offers a clean 1080p dual link or 3G SDI output of 1080 59.94p... aka 1080 60p. This clean uncompressed output feed can be *externally* recorded.

Ok so what's Pannny's plan for a super 35mm camera - usually they first.
They were first, with the AF100.

Haven't heard anything from them about any plans to go with a larger sensor, but if they do, I would presume it would go in the oft-rumored, never-seen "Varicam II".

Can't wait to see what everyone show up with at NAB. It should be interesting.
I would expect nothing new in large-sensor cameras at NAB. Everyone's already played their cards. Sony just released the F3 and FS100 this year, so they will be showcasing them and also the new F65. Panasonic's AF100 is less than a year old, it'll be what they show. JVC's off in la-la land with a 1/2" 4K 60p camera, they've been showing 4K 60p for at least two years running, count on it being three. And Canon will be showcasing the C300. And Red will have the Scarlet front and center with the Epic.

There really isn't time, or reason, for anyone to show anything new. Cameras take years to develop, and all these products have been put on the market less than one year ago. I think it would be wildly unrealistic to expect the manufacturers to come out with replacement products for products that are less than a year old.

This is on the specs tab from http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-PMWF3L/ but I was mainly going from what the menu indicates when switching modes.

I can try recording to sxs tonight at 60p and see what resolution it is. Should be 1440x1080 as indicated in specs. But definitely using SDI you can get full 1080 / 60p.

Where do you see 60p in that spec? In your graphic? I see 'i' but not 'p' for 1440x1080. AHHH, I see, its in the HQ area! :) Hahaha. Nice typo.

Well I would be very interested in seeing a Varicam II?

The F3 does do 1080P 60p over dual link.

Most horrible footage in history... yes i know. but its proof that it works. DL the original file.

Am I the only one happy enough with what I've got to be uninterested in anything else? Maybe. Is this the honeymoon period? Maybe. But I could care less about new products. GPU accelerated 64 bit editing software... hardware accelerated encoding solutions... portable editorial and cheap storage... a large sensor camera with broadcast controls and lots of nice glass... professional audio gear... an upcoming job to film and edit with all of it out of the country... yup, things have never been so good. NAB will be great, I am sure, but I am happy with what I've got.

Also, that HD Warrior blog article is the single least informed bit of writing I've read in a while.

"10bit, 4:2:2, 50Mbs is the MINIMUM starting point from here on in and anything less will be a joke."

What? That's so silly. Such a silly statement indeed. Most cameras on the market, that are flying off the shelves and have been out on the market for less than a year, most of them are 8 bit cameras. 5D, 7D, 60D, GH2, the HMC line, Sony EX line, The FS100 and F3, the HVX200(a), HPX370, HPX170, Literally, I promise there are thousands of them for every one Red or Alexa walking the street. Anything less might be a joke, but then I'd say we are all comedians. 4:2:2 and 50Mbs, I'll bite. But 8 bit will be around for a while longer. And if you know how to shoot, and love improving your craft, then it's not such a big problem.

So in the battle between the F3 and the C300... pick one and run with it.

That's my $0.02

HI,

I owe a sony f3 and think it is a great cam with many different faces. So far I am shooting mainly on sxs cards and I rent external recorders when there is need for one. I love the option of beeing able to record 1080 60p in 4:2:2...I love the fact that it can be 4:2:0, 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 cam all depending on the occasion...and the variety of lenses you can use with it is amazing...we are shooting on nikon and renting pl mount lenses if needed....the only camera that comes in close in terms of price performance if the fs-100

If only there was a less expensive solution to record 60p 4:2:2 externally...

I agree with that...I calculated that it is cheaper to buy a fs-100 to record 1080 60p than to pimp the f3 in order to be able to do that...

Save ur money for leicas....

At this point, cameras are gonne be closer and closer together. The difference between the c300 and F3 IMHO is less than 1%. But in either diirection...

10bit/8bit, EFcontrol, vs interchangeable mount, coke vs pepsi... etc

My good man, Pepsi sucks.

Got a chance to play with the C300 at a local demo and was very impressed with its clean image at 5000 and even 10,000 ISO. I think this is a great doc camera - 35mm sensor and broadcast standard 50mbps internal codec, with a large LCD (love the waveform monitor) and a lightweight, comfortable feel. It would allow me to shoot great footage without my Ki Pro Mini or even an external monitor. However, as a cinema camera (which it's ironically being marketing as), I think it's eclipsed by the F3, with its wider dynamic range, 10-bit output and killer S-Log.

A huge plus to me is that I can use my Canon EF lenses on the C300. Wish I could say the same for the F3, but that requires Birger to actually bring an adapter to market. Huge downside with the C300 is not being able to mount PL lenses onto the EF version. But maybe a PL adapter will be possible if the mirror issue that hindered the DSLRs doesn't exist here. I've posed that question to the world in this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...f-version-of-canon-c300&p=2490836#post2490836

I don't think you can go wrong with either camera, and each has somewhat of an edge depending on the situation. But then we already know that's the golden rule, right? There is no best camera, there's just what's best for your situation.
