Just to stop the rumour before it starts, the BBC article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3506803.stm

states that for November they used 25 cameras (dvx100's)

This is not true.

I talked To Jan at Panasonic and Nancy Schreiber this morning and they both confirmed that they only used 2 DVX's, 3 for a few scenes.

Thought I would kill the rumour before it started :)

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

Thanks Jarred. Maybe the BBC was confused by the 12 camera shoot for 28 days Later? :P

Who the **** would use 25 cameras anyway? Unless your blowing up a city...

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

yeah.. I would love to see that setup :)

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

Speaking of NOVEMBER

When the hell can we see at least a trailer?!

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

IFC aired about 1 minute of footage of "November" on their Sundance report and the footage looked remarkable! You could sense it was video (perhaps that's my trained eye speaking), but it felt like film, which is what matters.

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

I believe Lars Von Trier used 100 cameras for the train scene in Dancer in the Dark. They have a fairly detailed explanation of the setup on the DVD. Pretty remarkable shoot.

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

it was in the musical scene in the factory.. i own the dvd.. one of my favorites..

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

Von Trier's new film "Dogville" is the best thing I've seen in years. On the Danish DVD, they used DVXs for interviews.

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

i hated dancer in the dark. It looked so videoish- but good story. With dogville the idea of shooting everything in studio is fascinating.

November looked like video and felt like film- yes I agree.
DV movies are getting worse these days. Hopefully, better DV films will
come along.

note: some of those indigent films are so badly done. i can compare,
SAM the MAN, TADPOLE, TAPE and some more altogether-they have this part about DV filmmaking that is unattractive. maybe it's the angles, or the handheldness... it doesn't seem right. it seems like it's trying too hard. the 24p doesn't workout in those films. it just looks like stuttery video.
too much natural light, night lamps and indoor light is used. ugh... not a good idea.

looks so cheap.

I think there are people who understand the asthetics that the DVX has and those who don't.

it's the best image I've seen compared to canon and sony. There's no mini-dv that handles colors and gamma to the match film the way dvx does. long live dvx.

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

Not like I'm any kind of expert, but if it looks good and the story consumes you, then the medium is irelevant.

I bought the DVX because I felt it had the most dynamic exposure range for a low end camera...that i could afford.

I know, I'm not there yet; but the camera is...and there is satisfaction in that and that range is truely attainable. The rest is all filmmaking and storytelling.

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

yeah, who cares what it looks like if the medium matches the story. the lion king was animated , so does that mean its automatically not a good movie, and needs to be scorned. casablanca is black and white, so we should scrap that one too. its not about modern film being the only medium that can tell a story well. cause its not. its about the story, and the way you tell it. period. if you can accompany your story with beatiful / gritty/ pastel. or whatever images you can . to tell the story better, then i dont care if it was shot on film or not. filmmaking is abut telling a story through imagery, and sound, not through film and sound. .. thats kind of like saying that the only good paintings are oil paintings, and all the others suck just cause they werent done in oil.

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

Totally!

It cracks me up when they (you know who they are) scream "It's doesn't look like film!" when fillms such as Monsters, Inc., Lion King and the new Star Wars aren't even created on/in film.

Is it transferred to film? Hell yeah.

Make a film with the DVX100 and if you are fortunate enough to warrant a film transfer and it will look like film. Why? Because it will be on film!

As far as:

"SAM the MAN, TADPOLE, TAPE and some more altogether-they have this part about DV filmmaking that is unattractive. maybe it's the angles, or the handheldness... it doesn't seem right. it seems like it's trying too hard. the 24p doesn't workout in those films. it just looks like stuttery video."

Those films weren't even shot in 24p. A great story will make you forget what format it is in. The older films in Hollywood were orginally shot in the 4:3 Aspect Ratio. By todays standards that makes everyone scream "Oh no. That is not like film!"

:P

you're all right about that.

you're all right about that.

I agree with all of you.
I do agree that I get lost in the story if it's good enough. and I totally
forget about the medium. you're right.
I knew that before... but I guess I just love prettier pictures.
I love DV, I only watch these films to see how well they did on DV- if it wasn't for DV, I probably think these movies are crap- or wouldn't watch them.
AND as far as those movies I mentioned not being shot in 24p, They were transferred to 24p from 60i or from PAL to 24p- it doesn't matter.
about the lion king- bit- yeah pretty funny. don't go there. even those are transferred to 24frames per second for a cinematic viewing. nice try though.
in any case, keep shooting.

Re: November... Sundance winner.. 25 cameras...?

well what's the problem anyway?

are all of you just assuming that I'm wrong?

didn't I present a legitimate argument?
I wasn't trying to bash anything or anybody-
I was just simply saying how we all just want that film look!
goodness, no need for all this crap.
