noticing a trend

A PA will carry you up the steps in the event you can't do so yourself. Once you're inside, you're on your own.

Well, that's better than sitting in my own juices.

"R. Rodriguez being the exception that proves the rule, moviemaking takes collaboration."

No exception, not even him. He's definitely a genius and he makes good movies. But I've talked to no less than 3 people who consistently work on his movies, people who would be department heads, except that Rodriguez tweaks minute detials in their work and then steals the credit.

He did El Mariachi with virtually no resources or crew. Everything since is obvioulsy well delegated. Thousands of FX shots could hardly be done without collaboration.

The issue wouldn't be an annoyance except that students read "Rebel Without a Crew" and almost instantly sign on to this mindset that delegration is somehow a weakness. That nobody can do the job better than yourself. Many film students scoff at the concept of departments, opting instead to try everything themselves.

Funny you should say this...

Initially when I really wanted to get into making films.. I did a small fun project to kinda test the waters.. and found out then what it is like to rely on other people... specifically on other people that let you down.

I sort of straddled the line with my next project, doing the camera work and directing. Then editing. It worked out ok for my first drama short..

My next film was where I really felt the strain of doing too many jobs. I had to give my DP the boot for the **** job she was doing and took the camera up once again.

Delegation is a funny thing... I want to retain control of what I do.. but then I know there are people who can do those things much better than I... and it is hard to let go.

Wouldn't ya know it... I delegated more on my next film and it turned out to be a very professionally piece of work ... not easy...

My issue is finding people I trust and can work with... If I can't trust someone to do the job at least as good as I can.. then I cannot really work with them.

Finding people you work well with is so key. Delegation is fine, but if the work sucks.. it shows.. plenty of people ONLY direct.. and produce absolute ****.

I have been slowly getting my filmmaking team together over the past couple years.
