GH3 Noticed a very annoying quirk with the GH3 tonight...

Tonight I was running a two camera shootof a talk tonight. Both GH3s. Each with it's own mic input.
Everything checked out fine during setup and tests in standby mode.

When the event was about to start, I hit "record" on the cameras. I then took my headphones over to each camera and plugged them in. I COULDNT HEAR anything out of the headphone jack. The audio meter was showing levels, but I couldn't hear a single thing on either camera.

I couldn't stop recording and troubleshoot because of the talk and needed to just trust the levels were indicating audio was working.

After the talk, I immediately stopped recording. I could then hear out of the microphones again. I did a series of tests and realized:

If you hit record FIRST and then plug in your headphones, you won't be able to hear!!!! Very annoying.

In other words, make sure you headphones are always plugged in BEFORE hitting record!

On a side note, I noticed a quick way to bring up the display without touching the screen or messing with the lens or shutter....Simply rotate the dial (as if you are changing headphone volume). One single rotate will bring up the display. A nice way to bring this up without messing with worrying about changing focus, zoom length, or pressing the shutter to far.

Thank you for posting this, this explains some things! I was going to stop using my Zoom H1 on interview shoots once I got the GH3, but the first time I sat down to film someone I had no audio in the phones. Scrambled to use the H1 instead and have gone back to using it ever since.

Good point thx..... also don't plug in a monitor via HDMI while recording - it freaks the GH out and drops out of record.

Yeah that is a pretty annoying bug or design decision. Could popping in a small adapter help in a similar situation? The adapter may trick the camera into thinking the headphones are plugged in. You should then be able to plug in headphones at any time during recording. Stupid workaround but may be worth exploring.

That is a good idea. Too bad a firmware update has already been released. Is there a list of requests for the next update?
