Nothing from Panny?

People don't shoot 60p for digital cinema because that generates the soap opera effect. In the future if you project a 120 fps video stream you can project 24 fps natively for the drama and 60 fps for the fast action sequences. The end result is better motion fidelity and the audience does not complain about the soap opera effect. To me this is more of an advance than 4K.

I don't want to turn this thread into a discussion on the merits, or lack there of, high frame rates. I personally could care less for it.

I think some perspective is needed here: Back in the late 90s, In the "prosumer" range Canon had the XL1, Sony had the VX1000, and Panasonic had....the NV DX100? Not really a contender. But then..in a matter of 4 years Panasonic would release perhaps the most legendary prosumer camera ever -The DVX100. The others followed their 24P lead. Then HDV came, but still... the DVX was arguably better, resolution only matters so much. (Why 4K doesn't matter to me personally as much as a great image) In 2005 Panasaonic released the HVX and blew everyone away again....a "low cost Varicam". Then of course the DSLR thing happened in 2008...and in late 2010 (basically 2011) Panasonic gave many people what they really wanted - the large sensor in an actual video camera body (not costing a small fortune)
Last year Panasonic released a ton of great evolutionary smaller sensor cameras.
The Af100 is only 2 years old...so I just think in this hyper fast world, many people have lost a sense of true perspective.

Variable frame rates are not high frame rates but rather creative choice. With variable frame rates a cinematographer could project at 20 frames per second.

This thread is the discussion of the Panasonic Varicam. Varicam means variable frame rates for slow motion as well constant motion. So how am I off topic?

You don't want a discussion of a specific point, so you make your point by giving your negative opinion of what you don't want opined <g>?

I didn't think this thread was a discussion of the Panasonic Varicam, rather why there is nothing to discuss but the Panasonic Varicam.

I agree with this. I know a lot of people are smitten with the Black Magic "announcement." But so what? I'm really not disappointed. Barry has talked about the cycle at Panasonic with some insight and I never figured there would be another cinema camera from them this year. There's lots out there to choose from if you need a new camera. I don't know. I just don't think it's that big a deal. I'm kind of glad Panasonic is holding back. It's a bit of muddle right now. People want the GH3 sensor in the AF100. I think they can, and will do better than that and when they do, if I'm in the market, I'll consider it.

AF100 is 3 Years Old! Most of us would have been happy with some type of announcement of the AF200. Just an announcement is not too much to ask!

It's not 3 years old, it was shipping at the very end of 2010. (2011, 2012) Part of 2013.......2 full years and 5 months...
Yes, it would be cool to hear something, but next year should be their year to hit with something.

I guess an announcement is good in a way but I'm a little weary of "announcements." What good are the announcements? What of the announcement of the m4/3 BMC camera? What of the original scarlet "announcement?" Even this latest one about the s35 Black Magic is an "announcement." Make a camera we can buy. That'd be what I would ask. The rest is fun and all but it doesn't really mean much.. to me anyway. I know whenever Panasonic makes one that it will have the features I need to shoot.. wfm, nds, framerates.. a good solid camera, like the AF100.

I was hoping Panny would come out with a large sensor camera...hopefully in a Varicam form factor. Nope.
I was tempted to say Panasonic risks becoming as exciting as Ikegami. But now I see Ikegami has an interesting deal with Arri.
So at this point, Panasonic has nothing announced...or really anything in their product line...that interests me at all. It been a long time since that's happened.

Is the AJ-PX5000G attracting any attention at NAB?

Panasonic surely must have figured there is a market for a $28,000 2/3 inch AVC-Ultra P2 shoudler mount camera.

I am more than happy to stick with my AG-AC160A - works well for the kind of work I do.

Banned me from his site after after I mentioned that he holds the world record for posting false rumors

(1) 2011 -- he was posting rumors about AF200, even though AF100 had barely started shipping (in the process pissing of some Panasonic employee that was posting on his site as she thought false rumors like that would hurt AF100 sales)
(2) 2012 -- same thing again: AF200 rumors. Same denials from Pana employee
(3) When 2012 NAB officially unveiled, and there was no AF200, this time EOSHD clown started posting rumor that Pana has killed m4/3 for pro camcorders and is moving towards super 35mm -- this time really pissing off the Pana employee.
(4) 2013 once again, contradicting his last year claim, he was again predicting new m4/3 stuff from Pana. The guy can't even remember what he posted last year!!

When I mentioned all that history on his forum, he banned me ... but guess what? Now we know he was wrong again (what else is new?)

If your post on eoshd had the same taste of sourness that this one does, are you surprised?

I was also betting high on Pana releasing not a new AF100, but sth slightly "higher end" in the FS700/C300 market.
The filmmaker part of me who just wants "the PERFECT between 5000$ and 10000$ indie cinema camera with the PanaMojo" is disappointed and will probably move on to another brand.
The business man inside me thinks:
There´s a huge 2/3" broadcast market, with regular update cicles who will embrace Pana's announcements at NAB. A total "grey suits" market, with much less emotions and more facts, numbers and most importantly: loyalty.
More predictable and reliable for a Japanese electronic giant in this economy, than the undefined crowd of indie shooters, that will turn their back on the brand, once "he "next big thing" hits the market.
So next year, maybe Pana delivers this "next big thing", improving the points eg the BMCCs fall short, making many turn their backs on other brands and buying Panasonic.
The only thing reliable about this undefined crowd is that it is in constant motion, so there will always be new adopters once a new Panny hits the market.

I think it's just that people are still waiting for some kind of big sensor DVX: compact, professional, accessible, good image quality and codec. None of the cameras out there accomplish that a 100 percent though they are closing in. Panasonic has proven to be able to deliver that kind of camera and as time is getting ripe for such a product (basically a C300 with some improvements and a much lower price point) many are looking at them.

EOSHD deserves this tone. He never learns from his mistake, and continues to post weird speculations that always turn out to be false.

Remember all his GH2 beats F65 and Alexa filibusters last year? I have a pretty good memory and I remember things like that.

Here is another example: Now a days he rants against Canon, but a few years ago when Sony released F3, Andrew Reid is the same guy who was telling people on his website that Canon 550D (that is Canon T2i if you don't know) is just as good as F3, and F3 is overpriced. Go figure. He probably doesn't remember that he said that, but I do.
