Not understanding HDD issue

Had my HVX for 3 days now and reading the manual it says and shows a Pic of a Externall HDD. But from theforum here I read that we can hook up via laptop and then connect to HHD.. Which of course contradicts the manual.

I have 4 (250gb) external HDD from maxtor.
 
Just plugging an external hard drive into your HVX won't allow you to capture live video... it will allow you to dump P2 contents to the drive AFTER shooting to the card.
 
well that is okay :) I am shooting short 5 mins clips and can dump, shoot, dump, shoot. thanks for the help. I will say once I get into shooting lets say an Infomercial, where I might need to shoot 30 mins at a time, that is where the laptop to externall HDD comes in? I hear people talking about shooting into FCP or something?
 
try to find "live capture" somewhere here in the forum, its well explained, this would be a way for you for steady circumstances to stream the footage directly to your laptop/computer with fcp.
