Not Impressed with Audio... What am i doing wrong?

Up until this point when I shoot documentary style interviews I have used Lav Mics. Seinhesser(sp) to be exact. The audio sounds fine. But its never been really captivating like some of the videos I have seen online.

I plann on using a seinhesser(sp) shotgun mic on camera for my next project in hopes of getting better audio.

Would a shotgun mic boom pole help?

Should i run Lavs and Shotgun mic?

Is it something I am doing wrong in the editing process? Audio just sound lackluster.

( shooting with a HVX200)

here is an example video using Lav Mics only run into camera input 2 and then camera set both channels to Input 2

What is it specifically that you like about the other videos you have seen? I generally use shotgun mics and lavs. Placing a shotgun mic on your camera will probably not help. The rule from audio school was something like "one foot away you are good, 2 feet you are in trouble, three feet you are fired". In other words you need to get in close with a shotgun mic. Very close. If however you are doing an interview in an area that has some ambient noise or distractions a super cardioid lav head may be the best bet. I tend to lean more on my lavs in noisy environments and my shotguns in environments where I control the sound. I use mainly Sennheiser evolution series lavs and Sennheiser ME66 shotguns

I would urge you to read the stickies in the audio section. Many of your concerns have been discussed. There are microphone comparisons too.
