A potential future client of mine has been hit by flood waters. His computer was immersed. He's resigned to the possibility that he might have to get a new unit...but I've heard stories of computers coming back from the dead...but he's wondering what the chances are of recovering at least his hard drive.... anyone with a similar story?

Data retrival is seriously a mamoth expense if it's a hardware crash and can't be solved by software systems. I like Data Rescue, Disk Warrior, and Tech Tool Pro. They have saved many a harddrive of mine in the past. If it's not launchable.. and water-logged and a serious HD crash.. then it's time to take out a loan. I checked up on it and it's pretty much in the realm of huge corporations...

Tell ya buddy to Try those software options first... and do a little dance and prayer before hand....

....thanks guys....all this rain in the midwest is screwin' a lotta folks....had doo doo in the basement last night myself....naaaasssttty nasty bizness.

If it was fresh water I think there is a chance the stuff on the hard drive is okay. if the computer refuses to work after drying out try the hard drive seperately on another one. (I hope this isn't already obvious to you.) good luck

The issue here is mainly wheter any power was on or has been on since the water got to it. There is a slim chance it might work if there was not juice onit. HD's are pretty well sealed but if it was submerged...well. I would suggesttaking the drive out and getting a cheap external case. Examine the drive and lookk for obvious signs of water/moisture. Onsome drives ther is a plate you can remove on one side, carefully loosen the screews with a ground strap on and have a look under it for moisture and keep a hair dryer handy if you spot any.. Then all you can do is put it in the enclo9sure and try to mount it on another computer.
good luck and my heart goes out to your friend.

....I got him to open the case up and start the drying process...and he's found him an IT dude...poor guy estimates he's lost $10 Grand worth of stuff.... the GOOD side of it is that part of his business is water REMOVAL....so...he got screwed by the water...but... should be able to make it up by all the business he's getting.
