I recently bought a DVX100B and noticed something odd about the video it produces. I am trying to determine if this is normal for this camera or if my unit is defective.
The images below show the problem. When I increase the saturation on the video these rectangular blocks appear. Raising the saturation by merely 5 makes these blocks subtly noticeable. An increase of 10 and they become very noticeable. Anything higher than that and it becomes just obscene. I’ve included a frame grab at +100 saturation to show what these blocks look like in detail.
I’ve taken the camera to a repair shop and they said they couldn’t reproduce the problem. They reset the unit to factory settings and gave it back. Nothing changed. The camera was virtually right out of the box.
I’ve done the requisite troubleshooting. It’s not the tape as I get the same results via firewire. Also, I’ve played with all the settings and nothing seems to fix the problem. Perhaps I missed something? If so, I hope to find that out here.
Also, I get the same basic results under any lighting conditions. The effect is the same in progressive and interlaced modes.
My intention is to acquire images from another DVX100B to see if this problem is consistent in all cameras of this type. I’m going to see if my dealer will assist me in this, and if necessary I will rent one. However, I think you folks here may be able to help me… if you would be so kind.
I would like to see frame grabs from your DVX100Bs with the saturation increased like in the ones I present here.
At the very lease it will provide me with confirmation that there is something wrong so I can get a replacement or repair… or I’ll know that this is normal for this camera (I have trouble believing that) and perhaps learn of some sort of workaround.
So what is this phenomenon called anyway? Macroblocking? Chromatic aberration? It doesn’t quite seem like either. I searched this and other forums and couldn’t find anything quite like it.
Your help would be very much appreciated.
