I'm a noob, but enjoying the learning curve. Below is a quick rundown of my workflow, I would GREATLY appreciate some advice, as I feel like I'm going about this in the wrong way for some reason. (I'm self-teaching myself through the web, Lynda.com, some DVD's, and just diving in).
I'm currently working with my church on a set of simple welcome videos. End goal of about 40-50 seconds, with a staff/leader introducing themself and welcoming people.
I'm using a GH2 and an H1. I keep the H1 recording all throughout the "shoot", and either have a lav. plugged into it, or just have it on a stand close to the person.
We have a generic script, that contains a few things we want said, but other than that people can mix it up however they are comfortable. I first started by trying to get all 20-30 seconds of script in one take, but it was just to hard. So now we are doing 2-4 pieces, changing up the camera angle, lens, to give it some depth.
I'll start and stop the camera for each take for each scene. This has been working fine, as it gives a clear starting and stopping point. But, in my most recent shoot, I left it rolling with a few takes per shot, and I got some very good footage when the person was goofy off and being more themself.
I copy all the audio and video to a source folder within the project folder. Then I load it all into Premiere (and stay inside of Premiere, linking files to SoundBooth and AfterEffects), use PluralEyes to sync. then I go through and check the audio, as I've had mixed results with PluralEyes, and since I've got a LONG audio file to sync video to, I'll cut the audio to cut the video while I'm doing that. If any of the clips are absolute trash, I'll delete them from the timeline, but I keep most things, pushing all the takes from the different scenes into groups.
Then I go back through and try to find "the one" clip for each scene and move it to the front of the timeline in the rough order that I want it. After I have all the good video pulled (which takes a long time as I'll have 5-6 takes of each scene), I'll trim and edit it.
I then do my weak attempt at color correction, using Fast Color Corrector, setting the white balance, and then fiddling with brightness, contrast, and sharpness, mostly in an attempt to get consistency with the clips.
Then I'll add b-roll, title, transitions, and any After Effects work.
Then I'll tune the audio in SoundBooth, and adjust the audio levels and transitions. Finish up all the last minute details, and export it.
While working, I'm using some Seinheiser studio headphones, but these vids play on our sound system in a large room with poor acoustics. If anything needs tweaking, I'll do it, re-export, and be done.
I'm working on a 720p timeline, with 720p and 1080p footage. I don't have a slider yet, so I've been faking movement by keyframing position and scale on the 1080.
Let me know if I can clarify anything! Here's my vimeo account with most of the vids: http://vimeo.com/peripatew
Thanks!
