Noobie WB question

If I set the White Balance using the front button with a white card and then turn off the camera... will it remember that setting when I turn camera back on ?

Not sure if it would remember the white balance setting and there is no reason for it to do so. First, are you shooting totally manual in reference to the white balance settings? If you are in auto white balancing, or auto white balance tracking, or using one of the presents, then it is irrelevant.

Now even if you are totally manual, there is no reason for the camera to remember an old white balance setting, since the white balance will change with every change in lighting. In a short shoot, even in the same room with the same subject, I always check and reset the white balance. Even if lighting did not change and you turned off the camera, simply place a white card in front of the subject, hit the button and you got your white balance. So there is no reason or purpose, that I know of, to retain the white balance once the camera is turned off.

I guess its easy enough to set WB again... I shoot in manual mode... Reason I was asking is that the other day we were lighting a set before talent showed up and wanted to set exposure and WB but not leave the camera on for what might have been up to 30 min... assistant asked if the WB would be the same after turning camera back on... I had no idea ... Guess its always safer to re-check anyways :) Thanks

Yes, and your reason for wanting it saved is quite valid. I run into this all the time....same set, long/multi-day shoot.

Agree, it is safer and smarter to recheck the WB. In fact, it would be smart to recheck all settings. IMHO

Is this specific to the DVX200? Not a noobie but I have probably bren guilty of doing that...turning cam off and back on and not re-whiting, especially in interview/all day setting. Many cams tell you the actual color temp theyre balanced to right next the display of what WB setting youre on (A/B/preset etc.)...I would think that would tell you if you're still balanced. Of course in an interview situation you're often constantly looking at a monitor so you would probably notice if the image looked off.

It remembers the WB settings when you turn it off and back on, even if you remove the battery. I just tested it to verify.

Right: yes, it does remember a manual WB. But, it’s always a good idea to check, or re-WB, especially if the lighting situation has changed even a lttle bit. It depends on the situation, but, really, never neglect a simple thing like proper WB or BB if the situation warrants it. And especially if you’re shooting in log.
