Noob uploading to PC

Hi
I am completely new to the process of uploading footage to my computer. I have a DVX100b connected to my PC via 4/4 firewire and I'm just going to use Windows MovieMaker at this point.
Could someone help me out with this or point me in the right direction?
Many thanks

what are you going to use then?
if you don't have any type of video software, I don't think you can upload....

Just spoke with a friend. He suggested finding and downloading the driver for the camera. Of course Panasonic's website is not making it easy to find. Any thoughts on this?

It shouldn't need drivers, Windows knows how to use these things. But which version of Windows are you on? I've heard Vista hasn't been playing nice.

There is also a chance that Movie Maker can't capture from the DVX100b, from a quick Google search, but I can't verify if this is true. Seems unlikely to me. And the word is 'capture' when you put this footage on the computer, to help with your own searchs.

Welcome Sharpdressed.

First things first. We call it capturing not downloading. Its not a big deal, but it is a good idea to become familiar with common industry terminology. It will help folks get what you really mean when you ask a question.
We all started some where so to set up your camera for "capture" you need NLE (Non Linear Editor) software. Movie maker is really not a great option.
The biggest names in Pro video editing are The A's (Apple, Adobe, Avid) Avid and Adobe both offer a PC solution but you will have to have a bit of money. Adobe Premiere is about 800 bucks and Avid media composer is around 2,000.

If this is your first experience into video editing I would suggest Sony products.

They have some real basic software that is a stripped down version from their "pro" software for as low as 50 dollars.

Good Luck

Before I started investing in software I used "open source" alternatives, heres one you can try , or just do a search on your own for "open source video editing" , or something like that. There are a few of them out there, take your pick. Heres one I found real quick..

I use adobe cs4 on my pc , works great! But be ready to spend some serious time learning to use it. Good Luck

Before I started using Final Cut Pro, I worked with Adobe Premiere Elements - which is like an express version of Adobe Premiere Pro. I found it to be great for starting out. Cheap, too. You should be able to get it for less than 100 bucks.

Before I got a Mac with FCP, I had Pinnacle Studio that was $100 and came with a converter (rca, s vid and firewire) to usb rca and s video and a green screen and desktop mic. I don't know if they still have the package at Best Buy but it sure got me started. I haven't used Premiere Elements but I personally do not like Premiere Pro. You could also go open source or Sony Movie Studio/Vegas Pro. All of them are good I'm sure.
