Noob Rail question

OK, I'm a new DSLR video hobbyist and while learning everything I can (based on months worth of research), i still have one remaining question; What is a rail system used for? Meaning, If i have a D-Focus unit on my Canon 7D and my DIY automatic camera slider, why would i need a rail system? Again, i apologize for such a noob question but keep in mind that I'm learning. Thanks in advance

It's used for attaching anything you can think of - follow focus, matte box, lens support for heavier lenses, handles, cages, shoulder mounts, etc, etc.
