So i just bought an HPX 170 and I'm still trying to learn how use the P2 workflow. So for starters i know I need a Firewire cable to connect to the computer/ hard drive/ whatever i'm connecting to. But my next question would it just be better to get the addonics Pcmcia card reader or should i just get a firewire external hard drive? I've looked a little for a good external HDD with firewire and I haven't had much luck... Which option would be better and can anyone recommend a good HDD with FW support. Thank you and sorry for the nubness...

You can just offload from the camera via firewire. There are MANY fw hard drives - G-tech being the best. Hope I understood your question :)

come on man, you cant just cast broad strokes like
G-tech being the best.
thats totally subjective. there is no "best" there is bad, good and better.

id say "bad" would be most anything you can get at staples, best buy or say office depot. with the exception of maybe lacie. i prosonally have had bad experiences with EVERY lacie product ive come in contact with. but some people swear by them... so your mileage may vary...

"better" would include G-tech. but also include, glyph, owc, promax, caldigit, etc... these are drive products made by companies specifically focused on the graphics and video industry.

yes, you can simply connect a firewire drive directly to your camera and offload your card. there are some hoops you have to jump through but a lot of folks do it who dont want to get involved with laptops and various card readers...
