Noob mattebox question

Hi,

Excuse my ignorance but how does a mattebox attach to the lens and how does it accomodate different lens circumfrences? I have a little cokin kit for stills filters where you get screw in adapter rings and the cokin mounts over the adapter - does a mattebox work similarly?

Some matte boxes mount directly to the lens using adaptor rings. Others are mounted on rails in front of the lens.

There are even some cheap ones available on ebay that work with the cokin filter system.
