Nonnews Look

May I have some advice on shutter speed and frame rate for getting a look like I see on many cable shows verses the news broadcast look or the soap opera look, ie. closer to film. Most of my productions are run and gun with high quality lighting on interviews, sort of a reality style of video. I need as much flexibility in post as possible and I would like to be able to move around somewhat rapidly with camera moves while avoiding a lot of strobing.

With regards to scene files, I want to keep my colors flat. I almost always run with the factory presets or scene file one (on the 500) for my video productions. I also shoot most everything in 720p60. I am looking to move over to shooting all 1080. I realize that there are a lot of scene files out there. Short on time I'd love it if someone would point me in the direction of 1-2 scene files or just camera settings that I can start running with in place of what I continue to do regularly.

I edit in FCP and I think I have come to the conclusion that I can't manipulate the video in post to get to what I am trying to accomplish. I wish I could just shoot 1080-60i all the time and make the video look the way I want it in post.

Thanks in advance.

From your post, I think shooting 720p60 gives you the most options compared to 1080i.

I am not sure about the cable news compared to the broadcast news you are speaking of. 720p60 will give you the option to process the footage in post and get a decent 24p or 30p from the footage if you want that look.

I shoot with SDNorm as the gamma and Cine V (may be just "cine" can't remember right now) for the color. This to my eyes has the least amount of black crush of the gammas and the Cine V color has a really nice look. Not exactly flat but looks the best to me.

I also lower the detail and sharpen in post to avoid halos and reduce noise.

I also am not sure exactly what you're after, but if you're wanting a more filmic look rather than a newsy video look, then what'll probably help most is to shoot 1080 24P, 25P or 30P depending on where you want to show it. This will give you that filmic blur rather than the live news look.
