NON-Panasonic tapes in DVX...?

Thanks in advance for your time!

It is becoming harder and harder for me to find local retailers in my area that carry Panasonic miniDV tapes these days... in fact, as of yesterday, I have been unable to find a single panasonic tape in my city! What are the risks of using a sony miniDV tape for a few hours? Obviously, I will take my search online, but I have several shoots to do in the next few days, and don't want to have to tape over old footage (p.s what should I expect if I do end up doing this?)

Thanks again!

I never had an issue using non-Panny mini-DV tapes in my HVX, as long as they were decent quality.

Keep in mind, most mini-DV tapes are made by just a couple of different manufacturers and just re-branded.

It doesn't matter, but you should stick to a certain brand since, historically, some of the lubricants weren't compatible. But I've never actually seen a problem from that, and I kind of think that they fixed that problem so it doesn't matter anymore.

People will argue both ways. I'll argue, it's better to be safe than sorry.

BHphoto.com carrys Panasonic miniDV.

I think that Sony is the only major brand that uses a wet lube tape, so it's a bad idea to mix them with Pannys. (maybe someone can verify that) But you should be okay with something like a TDK.
