Non-DVX electronic issue i need help with....

Rich Lee

I shoot Pirates.
so, i went to frys and purchased some of those little cathode flourescent tubes. the kind that people put INSIDE their computers to make it light up. anyway, i want to make a prop out of it, and am trying to figure out a way to power it without having to use a cable from a computer. Right now it has a power connector that you would use to power a hard drive in a cpu. So, i thought i could just buy a little cpu power supply and plug the light into that and then plug the power supply into the wall. but that didnt work. the power supply woulndt even turn on. anyway, if anyone has any idea, let me know. thanks!

Many computer power supplies won't put out anything unless the motherboard connectors are connected...or diddled with.

Unfortunately, I don't know the pinouts to tell you how to fix it. (It can be done).

im gonna try getting some batteries and testng it out.

im also going to see about maybe tricking the power supply into thinking its connected to a motherbaord. maybe there is some sort of the connector that can do this? i dunno.

thanks for the tips guys

honestly, if it has a standard 4 pin hard drive power connector your best bet would be to get two appropriate drive power connectors and make an extension cable.

if you have a friend who is handy with a soldering iron enlist their help.

that is what i do when i have something electrical that is more than plug and play.

be careful with electricity and do it yourself wiring...

To turn on a standard ATX power supply, short the green wire (sometimes its thinner than the other wires as well) with one of the black grounds.

Some power supplies won't give out anything on the 12V unless there is a load on the 5V.

Please use this information at your own risk as I am going on memory, but I have done it in the past and am still here.

holding the florecent tube with one end between your teeth and your finger in the power supply step on the blue cable and down a shot of tequila . . . that should brighten things up a little!

Hey seriously, I wouldn mess with the motherboard or supplies on this one unless you know what you are doing, are there any directions with it?
