Non AI Lens on a D5200?

I just purchased a Nikon non-AI 200mm lens from KEH. I know I can get the lens converted to AI. But do I need to? I'm not going to be using it for still and I won't be using the in camera metering. So could I just mount the lens on the body and use the lens' manual iris ring? Thanks much!!

I believe it to be a physical/mount restriction where putting a non or pre AI lens on the body could actually damage the camera's mount.

Kevin, thanks for the input. ;) After doing some extensive web searching, I think I've stumbled upon an answer. It seems that the 5200 and similar body style Nikon DLSR's will work with almost any F mount lens (except for some odd fisheye model). This because this body style does not have an aperture sensing ring found on cameras like the D800. Of course, there will be no in camera metering. I hope this helps, but to anyone reading this, please do your own research as well. I'd hate to steer someone the wrong way. (I'll give an update once my lens arrives.) Thanks again.

Bobby, I dont think you can mount a NON AI or a PRE AI lens on any nikon dslr. What you have written is true for AI.

Yeah. It says a conversion is required. You can find these lenses by the name of AI'D. These lenses are either NON AI or PRE AI and they are converted hence called AI'D.

sharry, the page says "The D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100 and D5200 will accept non-AI lenses as-is but without metering..." And further down there is a chart with pictures that illustrate this claim.

D5200 manual page 201 says nonAI lenses are incompatible. Be careful you can damage your D5200 lenses mount. It's not a metering issue. The back f-stop ring is to large.
EDIT : Ok. i can't understand why a nonAI can't be mount to a D5200. I'm curious to know if it's possible.

I'm completely aware of that, no joy was killed here.

I was just expressing how that makes me envious.

That's a nice thingn the 5200/5300 have that the 7100 doesn't
