Nokia 808 Pureview 41-megapixel camera phone!

I guess the time when Cellphone cameras blow away DSLR's Image quality is not that far away, the question now isn't "if" is gonna happen but "when" is gonna happen. welcome to the "Nano" World.

The iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy SII already blow away they the Canon DSLRs for wide shots... [as long as it's exposed correctly]. Very little mush and higher resolved detail =]

Mmmmmhh - Zeiss glass - nice.
But Symbian as OS is a deal breaker.

Gotta be Android or at least WinPhone7.

Yeah I notice there's 2 very off putting weaknesses, Symbian [even though it's the best Symbian...], and that the screen is only VGA and not HD :\

Very impressive, all this coming from a phone. I remember a top Canon sales person saying that the P&S cameras sales had been
severely affected by the cell phone cameras. I guess this is another nail in their P&S casket- maybe "nails" is a better way to say it.....

Indeed. I think this speaks enough:

Take a look on this crop from one those above:

EDIT -- I also played with these two samples, one of them @ pure low 1K resolution -- let's figure what means for Scarlet 1K shooters! : D

Do it. No need for comments.

The funny is that @reduser there are people misinformed thinking that's only 3K as something already truly remarkable for a phone...
3K for $3K syndrome... LOL 8K is not even in their mind as of 2012, once EPIC is only 5K ;)

That specially made Carl Zeiss lens seems to resolve a good deal. http://www.flickr.com/photos/nokiaofficial/6934445859/sizes/o/in/set-72157629100338650/ I am still gobsmacked at that 7728 x 4354 image. There's only some very slight red abberation and some slight fogging but wow... the highlight detail and colors and lack of aliasing are amazing... I hope it has a raw
function rather than only JPG - but as I remember with my old Symbian phones - the software is incredibly easy to hack.

Just waiting for video examples now :)

So I'm curious .... what kind of lens do you need to actually resolve 41 Mpix of resolution?

Indeed. Let's not confuse pixel count with resolved image detail. Not at all the same thing.

It's going to take a hell of a lens, exacting technique (good solid tripod, hitting exposure on the nose while avoiding diffraction and lens flare problems, etc.) and intelligent electronics (an excellent CODEC, and excellent stabilization that knows not to screw things up when it's on a tripod, etc.).

Is it doable? Yes. Will this particular phone do it? Remains to be seen.

And of course if we are talking video all this is pretty meaningless -- HD is still 2.1 Mpixels, and this phone is still AVCHD. Even if it is 25Mbps, it's still 4:2:0 eight bit. Just sayin'.

Nah, I think DSLRs are safe. The smart cell phones will decimate the point and shoot market, but the DSLRs will annihilate the medium format market. The D800 is the first to intrude on this segment. Granted, the Nokia is 40 MP, but it won't replace a dedicated image machine. If the little Nokia can be that good, imagine what a DSLR sized camera will be able to achieve. The hasselblad digital back is going to have to compete in the 4x5, 8x10 arena with the DSLR's taking over the previous medium format segment.

I highly doubt that. Resolution is not the only mark or measure of medium & large format imaging.

I like having more pixels than a lens can resolve. Looking at the sample picture on flickr, the lens is doing quite well, but it is a tad blurry at 100%. I like that though. I think a camera should out resolve the lens.

The only thing I dislike about small pixels is that all things being equal, bigger pixels capture more dynamic range (according to something I read on the internet, and now quote as fact). Once that is factored in, having more than enough pixels is just a luxury, not a necessity, whereas a true 13stops DR with an extra two stops of useable latitude would be high on my list of features.

Kind of, if all things being equal... but that's never the case.

Otherwise my old 1/3" sensor size 1 megapixel miniDV camcorder should have amazing dynamic range... or our old 2/3"Sony DSR570s broadcast cameras too.... but no, they don't, they're now more rubbish than my iPhone and webcam =]

It seems this Nokia 808 has a second processor dedicated to downsampling the photo and videos... now I'm really just waiting for some good raw clips to come out now. If not it's a trip to the shop when it's out! :D
