Noisy Zoom

A friend of mine was doing some research on the dvx100 and found something that said you can hear it on the tape when you zoom in and out. Just wondering if this is true. I film mostly motocross and other extreme sports where it is noisy so it wouldn't be much of a problem, but in some cases it would.

well this isnt specific to the DVX but if you use the on camera mic of any camera there is the possibility of it picking up camera noise. this is why you dont use an on camera mic

But like Sink said - I don't think it's any louder than any other camera at the same level. Any camera is going to pick up mechanical noise when using the camera mic.
The DVX is no exception - but it's by no means worse than any other cam out there (I think).

I guess it all depends on how you look at it.
You can always spin it and say "wow, check out how sensitive the mic on the DVX is!"

But seriously - like Sink mentioned - this is exactly why people don't use on camera mics. Get the mic away from the camera body, and you'll cut down trememdously on the handling/mechanical noise.
