hi all
can anyone tell me why i get a lot of noise when shooting sky when it is not very bright. have attached a jepg of a shot in early morning, the main problem is when the sky changes hue from a pinkish to light blue colour - there is a lot of noise where the two colours meet. jpeg attached
thanks,
tony

That's a pretty dark shot with an almost mid-gray sky. I'd expect to see noise in there in the mids. No gain you said?

I'd also point out the shot looks like it's not white balanced, this will cause lots of unwanted noise. Plus you cant expect to lighten an underexposed image and not find noise.

thanks for comments, there was no gain used in shot, the image has not been lightened - i just darkened part of it to make the area i was talking about stand out. yes i would expext to see noise in an image with low light, but the sun had pretty much come up when i took the shot. my point is why is there only any significant noise in the part of the sky where it changes colour from pink to blue, the image seems to break up, where i would expect a smooth transition - have attached a jpeg of area in question

thats Banding buddy!!!!! welcome to HD in 8bits.... i have ben having the same artifact.

Cant be helped.

ozduc - didn't really take down details od scene file, pretty sure i was just on F1 standard, mode though, 1080/50i this was part of an attempted time lapse that i abandoned, so no white balance as it was nearly dark when i started, and as i was in a dodgy area to get the shot, was more worried about getting mugged than noting the settings

4mat - the bit i'm refering to is where the pink colour changes to blue - have attached another segment for you to look at

timur - i think i have to agree with you - it's a shame, because the rest of the picture i'm happy with, it's just annoying that this transition between hues seem to break up, just wondered if this was something that was generally known about and accepted

if i use F6 CineD would that give a better result?
