FS7: noisy handgrip dial

The more I think about the hassle & expense involved (include cine mod) + likely loss of IQ , I may just stick w the ZFs for now. If it's only a couple of lenses w reverse gears it might be easier to remember & my shoot 35 FF can switch direction quickly . The focus confusion is worst w the run & gun lenses anyway .
If there's an IQ hit then a Rokinon might actually be better choice anyway at least for FF.

Hey - is it possible to just grind something down on the lens or adapter without doing real damage ? I had to do that w some old Nikon IAs back when . I don't think it even affected their usefulness on old film cams just reflected a change in tolerances over the years . How many people use these things w Contax cams anymore anyway ?. You might be raising the value. And it's prob easy w a Dreml .

BTW - do you put gears on Rusky lenses for FF ? Ebay is selling one for a Jupiter and it's wider to work with change in barrel length as you focus

No idea about filing stuff down. I don't have any intention of taking a dremel to my classic set of 20-30+ year old lenses. Happy for you to be the guinea pig and do it and report back if it all works though :)

I'm going to double check the lenses with my friend's old speedbooster because that might be an option instead of the ultra.

As for the Russian lenses, I don't have the Jupiter any more but on my Helios and on my DogSchidt I just use these - http://www.robertwhite.co.uk/lenses/focus-gears.html - The 'mini' version fits the |helios fine and I imagine it would also be fine with the Mir and Jupiter.

Haha - great solution . You know who makes those don't you ?
Sam - how do you find the time when you're posting on this board all the time . :)

What at about grinding down the metabones ?

I guess even if you don't want to , does it look like a little shave somewhere woul do the trick .

I've returned the Metabones Ultra now so I can't really comment. I think you'd have to 'snip' the aperture control tab until it sat lower than the rest of the mount so it didn't get activated by the Speedbooster.

Wide Open Camera isn't it? Are you about to tell me you're the CEO? If so can I get a bulk discount :)

Just speculating - Without looking & off hand , if other the other metabones does work, then it could just be a slight tolerance issue that perhaps a little grind could fix right up w no harm done .

Didn't you ever file down one of your teeth to improve the smile ?

id have to buy an adapter and a lens to check it though

Hold it a sec - can't you just put a $20 Contax to EF in between & use an EF metabones ?

you don't need the power anyway . I'll already have the EF speed booster .
Now metabones cautions not to stack secondary adapters but that's because they can short the contacts . I was able to do it on Nikon though just w a peice of tape covering the contact point . I'll have to check their site - they do specifically warn about one adapter .

Btw - Sam is shy I hope I didn't "out" him .

My 2 cents - the Contax camera has to grab that lever from the side not the bottom and if it's just a tolerance off it won't affect jack . Looks similar to Nikon F .
Caveat - I've never even seen the thing so what do I know !

the 5Omms are cheap tho so maybe I'll try one . Course won't know if I ruined it without a Contax body .

Yep I make the gears under HIR brand in the UK and rebranded WOC for the USA market :)

My less known and poorly distributed FAT gears have a load of width for lenses that telescope significantly when focussing - Mini and Maxi are good for most lenses.

Anyway - if memory serves me right the FFD* of Contax and EF is too close to use a regular adapter - you have to take the contax lens apart and put a new bayonet in.

Once you have done that any old EF-SonyE adapter should work. I dont know about boosters because the elements might clash, but I empirically doubt that.

I use Contax lenses absolutely fine with Leitax EF mounts, with cheapo £15 EF adapters and with custom EF mounts from thelensdoctor and on anything from dumb EF E Mounts to the Commlite on the FS7 to the Lens Turbo (on A7, not FS7). It's just the dickhead Metabones Ultra having an issue.

Good work on the gears :)

Thanks!

My memory served me wrong about Contax/EF

Im a fan of £15 adapters too - I've bought some expensive ones and they have been equally variable!

I have to say though you simply cannot beat the Leitax mounts if you're serious about this shizz. Utterly rock solid and semi-permanent although also reversible.

So I gotta say i'm a little confused. Are you using an EF speed booster or a Contax speed booster Ultra?

I see on B&H that metabones sells a contax speed booster Ultra. Why would they do that if it doesn't work on those lenses?

I've always said from day one that my Contax lenses are modded to EF mount and all my adapters are EF to E mount.

I had no idea there is/was a Contax speedbooster but obviously that wouldn't be machined in the same shape/way as their EF one so I assume it would be fine. Just no good to me.

I'm sorry I should have read back more carefully instead of bending your ear so much here. Assuming the one designed by metabones works then, I could just buy the contax lenses and the adapter and be good to go. Get a $20 adapter for the Canon still cam.

Well as Gilda Radner used to say - "Never Mind". Thanks again for all the input.

(Try that dremel)
