Noisy footage - outside

I'm an editor, but it's fun to dabble with other stuff occasionally. So I grab my HVX and go outside to just run some basic tests on 1080 footage. You know, get to know the beast. When I brought it back inside there is a bunch of noise. (User error for sure.)

I know someone just posted a noisy image question. But mine is for the outdoors. The lighting should be good, right? Hopefully? Well, there is enough of it anyway.

Here is a video of it at 100% resolution. It's all over the footage, but look at the tree in particular.

It was a simple set up. I had the cameras scene file set to F1, I used the 1/64 ND filter, opened the iris to 3.4 (checking exposure with a waveform monitor).

I don't need to fix this footage, and I don't want to buy a plug-in. My question is why so noisy?

Not being a cinematographer, I'd love to get some helpful tips and tricks for simple outdoor - no light kit - shooting.

Thanks.

There are the settings, I'm pretty sure they are the factory defaults for that Scene File.

The HVX is a noisy camera. If you drop the Master PED to -1 or -2, the image should look cleaner. Also try to shoot at f5.6 and with the skin tone dtl on.

I would suggest you to bring down the A. IRIS LEVEL to -2, the MASTER PEDESTAL to -7, the GAMMA to B. PRESS and MATRIX to CINE-LIKE. Hope you like it. You might also try setting up the DETAIL CORING to +1.

Cheers.

I shoot a lot outdoors and it shouldn't have that much noise for the amount of light for your settings.

What editor are you using and were those proxies or the full 1080 down ressed?

If you use a program like ray light make sure the quality is lossless. I think this is a post problem and not a cam problem.

ChipG,
That was the full res DVCPRO HD 1080 logged and transfered from the p2 and then dropped into final cut where the sequence determined the settings. It's as straight out of the camera as I know how to make it.

CinemaElectronika,
Thanks for the pedestal advice. I'll give it a whirl and see what happens.

I'll second the recommendation for gamma to B-Press, it is the cleanest. Also the detail coring should help. Making sure you are adequately exposed can make a huge difference, use those zebras.

Jedd,

Here are the settings I mainly use for outdoor stuff although I do use cine-d outside at times and I have never seen the much noise in in it wth that much light.

DL + 4
VDL +4
DC + 2
CL + 2
CP 0
CT 0
MP -5
NG off
G B. Press
K mid
matrix cine-like
STD off

It's a matter of personal preference but those are my personal fav for the outdoors and not nearly as much noise as your clip, you can do some more tweaks with the detail coring and drop the chroma to reduce noise more. I do have the chroma +2 (for gloomy days it's good but might be to much with the sun out for some, matter of taste, colors POP).
