noisey zoom

I just got my HVX a couple of weeks ago and I'm editing some footage for the first time. The on-camera mic picked up the sound of the zoom motor when I zoomed in or out quickly. It was quite audible. When I zoomed slowly it was much quieter. On manual zoom I can hear it a little but it's not objectionable. Is that normal or do I have a camera with a damaged zoom motor?

Thanks.

Unfortunately when you have an internal mic attached to the camera the sounds made by the camera's mechanical stuff travels inside it like a tuning fork. Fortunately this is easily solve by using an external mic. If it's attached to the camera with a mount use a shock mount to reduce any residual noise made by the cameras internals. On the upside, using a decent external mic will give you substantially better sound than the internal mic is capable of.

Thanks. I'll try a mic on a shock mount. I've used a pd150 for years and never picked up the sound of the zoom so I wasn't sure if it was working right.

You should use the internal mic for reference or backup only, not for actual production sound. This is true of all cameras.
