Noiser settings in picture profiles

Hey guys, so i'm sure this has been said in some multi-page thread about PPs and such, but what are the certain settings that produce more noise? I'm using a slight mod of franks PPs (i just take out the WB shift) and the glencolor 2.0 is very clean up to 6400-8000iso or 21-24db but his glog A(pretty sure its A) PP is quite noisy even at 12,15,18 db. Is this the color mode/gamma setting? cinetone vs standard/pro? Whats the dealio here. I just shot some lowlight stuff with glencolor 2.0 at about 15/18db and its very clean but the other day i shot some glog A stuff at like 12 and it was so noisy! thanks guys

I use frank PP G-LOG Ultimate which is based on Cinematone2 .
GAMMA: Cinematone2
BLACK GAMMA: High/+7
KNEE: Manual/80%/+1
COLORMODE: Cinematone2/+8
COLOR LEVEL -2
COLOR PHASE -7
COLOR DEPTH: R -3/G +2/B +5/C 0/M 0/Y 0
WB SHIFT: all zero
DETAIL: Level -3/BW Balance Type3/Limit7 everything elese at zero

It is perfect for outside shoots . It highlight roll-off very well . But it seems little bit nosier that PP Kyle McConaghy which is based on Gamma: ITU709 . And this PP I like to use for interior shoot .
Black Level: 0
Gamma: ITU709
Black Gamma: middle, -2
Knee: 100%, -1
Color Mode: Cinematone 2, 8
Color Level: -3
Color Phase: -1
Color Depth: R -2, G +3, B +4, C +7, M +2, Y +5
WB Shift: LB-CC, LB -3, CC -3, R -2, B 0
Detail: -5

hmm ya the g-log PP is the one I am having issues with, its not the ultimate but its the older glog A i believe, using the standard gama setting and pro color mode setting and its much nosier than my glencolor PP which using cinetone2 for both of said setting. Maybe frank can chime in here and help. It's really not a huge issue since the super-flat glog doesn't look that great in low light anyway IMO

As I said on my blog, all the PPs where work in progress.

The Ultimate ist the endpoint of this development, since I gained enormus knowledge an insight (with a ton of trial and error) what exactly those parameters do.
So Ultimate actually renders the older versions obsolete IMHO. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

And yeah, different PPs produce different amounts of noise.

Frank,

Do you know what exact setting make this happen? just curious. I am going to try out the glog ultimate.

Mostly a combination of the gamma and ISO you use at a given light situation.
Also I found that some of the color settings (depending on all other parameters) and introduce some noise.
It's like a clockwork. Turn one little wheel here or there and the behavior of everything else get also changed.

That is why it took me so long - it's all about the right balance to milk the maximum out of the sensor.

ahh i thought so, so its the standard gamma and pro color mode that are causing the noise in my PP. the cinetone2 gamma and color mode are very clean for me

The Standard and REC709 gamma curves are noisy from 0-about 25 ire. Above that they're clean as a whistle.

The noise is mostly in the Blue and some in the Red channels (green is clean) as you'd expect so any profile that you've concocted that increases the gain in R and B channels will appear noisier.

I've been experimenting with low light profiles and found that cinetone1 is the cleanest at high gains/ISO. Even though the STD/REC gamma curves have brighter mid tones when you pile on the gain their noise becomes obvious whereas CT1 is amazingly clean for the gain.

BTW the FS700 crowd are beginning to notice their cameras have the STD/REC type noise in their cinegamma profiles but from looking at examples they appear to be affected more than a FS100. The FS700 is more noisy in that region and there's more chance of them seeing it when shooting slo-mo.

The noise is quite low but you need to know about it as if you want to do a bit of grading in post the image can fall apart very quickly in the 0-20ish region. I first noticed it when I shot a PTC with a graduated background, I thought I'd pull up the background a bit in post but it literally crumbled to pieces, I wasn't expecting it at all. The camera is really clean above that zone so I just try and keep a bit more light in the scene as I can pull it back down in post or use the cinetone1.

The noise looks like compression noise being quite blocky in nature so it would be interesting to see if anyone with an external recorder can see a similar noise profile in the 0-25 region.
