noise

I know the noise issue has been discussed on this camera however since ive never owned a panny before could someone tell me if high noise in the shadows is a common feature with their cameras? Ive always owned sony cameras but have always been envious of the almost "film look" the panny would give but even from earlier cameras ive heard the same nags being brought up. I currently shoot on a canon 5d but sick of not having proper controls and now feel the need to buy another camera and so im trying to figure out if the exaggerated noise in the af101 is a panasonic trait or possible technical fault that may possible be fixable via firmware update. Seeing as im in no real rush i may just wait to see what sony provide in a few months but ive got to admit, the videos ive seen from the 101 are absolutely lovely.

for example look how lovely this image is but also look at how noisy it is in the darker areas. http://www.vimeo.com/19462769

this video also looks beautiful http://www.vimeo.com/19305627 and seem to have tamed the noise a little. Maybe im just too used to my 5d crushing the blacks (annoyingly sometimes) and my sony ex1 preserving the lows a lot more.

I didn't see much noise at all in either shot...
The bar scenes I saw some compression artifacts in the darker areas, but I think those are from Vimeo and not the camera...

I think that it would be a nice compromise between your 5D and EX1. Unless you could afford the Sony F3.

When my cam came in I was expecting to be blown away by all the specatacular noise some people talk about. To my disappointment all I saw were clean images.

The noise I see on this camera is pretty typical for every other camcorder I've owned in the last 2-3 years. One thing that does stand out is how clean higher ISOs are, though that's probably due to in-cam noise reduction...which has it's own nasty downsides.

I haven't experienced any unacceptable noise with this camera.

Typically, I white/black balance in each new environment and use custom Scene File 6 settings, with no noise issues whatsoever.

for my experience,
noise on a hd monitor
no noise on my editing cpu

bottomline for me, there is noise in the lower IRE but its the kind thats inperceptible or something you can hide.

Thanks guys. @JPM Photography I wish i could afford the F3 lol. At the risk of being attacked my gut feeling towards that cam is for 12k i was expecting more image wise, 50mb/s and 4:2:2 at the least. Beautiful cam, beautiful images but not enough big of a jump for me to want to spend 3 times the money, id rather wait for the smaller version which has the same sensor and more in my price line.
