Noise

Any ways to reduce noise on dark area? I have tried playing with detail coring (+) but terrible noise still there in the dark areas. (Shooting high contrast lighting ratio and iris on "Open to 2.4F" most of the time)

Sometimes "patches of noise" appear on grey and dark red walls too.

I'm using DVX102A in PAL land.

Appreciate any help.

Cheers

if you are looking for high contrast, and you are getting noise, you should adjust your master pedistal. You can also do this in post by adjusting your curves. Are you shooting daylight balanced or tungsten balanced?

thks scharky...

are you suggesting that I don't light too contrasty and we crush the black?

I'm shooting on tungsten balanced.

It's kind of hard to say. I don't know exactly what look you are trying to achieve. If you posted a grab it may be easier to asses the problem. Grain will normally occur in strong colors that are under 15IRE, or around there. I have never found it problematic, but I have seen it. To there are different ways to get rid of it, the easiest is to crush blacks and get rid of that lower 15IRE. You might also check your camera settings. Cine matrix will add grain, as well as Bpress in the shadows. Try different settings to see if you can get rid of it.

You wouldn't be able to play back your footage on most TV's. You could capture and edit it, but not monitor, unless you somehow converted it to 24p NTSC. If it sounds like a hassle, it is. Just get the NTSC model.
