Noise on dark parts of video

Scharky, is this reduced noise optained with the WB in 3200K preset mode, or white balanced on a white card with the filter on in daylight.

Andre, either one. When you place the filter on the camera you will automatically force the camera to be closer to 3200k than daylight when you white balance or use the preset. So as long as you keep the color temp low you will be good. IT is when you boost it from 3200k to 5600k that the ccd's get noisy. This is not just the DVX that will do this, I have expereienced the same thing with Digital SLR's and other camcorders.

Harlowz,

Here's a question from an amateur...
I was wondering since the blue channel is noisy, won't white balancing with a 85B filter causes the ccd to compensate the "orange-ness" by add more blue? and isn't switching from 56k prst to a 32k prst means that more blue is added to change tungsten lights into white light? How then does it become less noisy?

It adds blue, but after the CCD's. The important thing is that less blue light will reach the blue CCD...

I had the same problem with some of my footage. Looked great on my computer monitors but the TV output looked noisy and blotchy. Tried many differnt TV's as well as cords, but still no luck.

Point is of course that less blue light enters when the filter is on. So the S/N in the blue channel worsens. In order to still produce correct white balance for the luma channel( which is made out of a weighted sum of the RGB signals), the blue channel needs more amplification which which normally produces more noise. The reason for my "preset"question is because I stronly suspect that extra noise filtering is applied in the 3200 preset mode.

Noise issue.

Noise issue.

Well after reading all of this I think I can safely say I will shoot film. I jest.

Is it to my understanding that some of you prefer shooting exteriors on the 3200K preset but put filteration (the 85b) in the filter tray to bring your camera to the proper colour balance for exteriors (5600k), thus reducing black noise on exteriors?

Reason being is that the ccd's are more likely to induce noise on the 5600k preset?

I wonder if this is something that panasonic is totally aware of? In other words they compromised an area of the camera in order to achieve a desired look in another. Although blacks on Day exteriors are more rare.

I am shooting a science fiction short in 3 days using the mini35 and the dvx100a and the thought of shooting with the presets was a given but filtration in my matter box was already is something I will test tomorrow.

Thanks sharks..

I have noticed this, compression has alot to do with it also. Like when I make a quicktime movie, and burn that to a DVD than I will have more noise. A mpeg2 usally will have less.
