Noise issue

I have trouble with my ex1 noise level. It seems like camera is really noisy in almost every condition. I have a sample picture and video clip.

I don´t know if my settings are wrong or is it just my 1920x1080 lcd monitor that shows the noise just too clearly.

My camera setting are:

Matrix: cine, Level +15
Detail: on, Level -20
Gamma: cine4, Level 0
Black: level 0
Black gamma: level 0
Gain: -3

What do you think?? Is it just my imagination? I don´t think it should be this noisy.

Any thoughts and help would be very nice

Thanks

You're kidding, right? What noise?

If anything, there's too much contrast and the highlights are completely blown.
-3dB tends to crush blacks.
I would try another gamma curve, something that doesn't deepen the blacks so much. Maybe a little black stretch in the black gamma as well. There's a lot of room to increase dynamic range of this kind of scene when shooting.

BTW, how did you get cleared to record video in the cockpit? Was this a chartered flight?

If you don´t see the noise then it´s my monitor. You should see the footage on my lcd. It´s very noisy. All the parts that are even a little underexposured are suffering heavy noise, but I guess it´s just my monitor then.

My girlfriend is a flight attendant for finnair. That´s why I´ve visited and recorded video in the cockpit many times:D

Yes, the frame looks clean to me. Could be you're using an LCD with the brightness or the gamma set incorrectly, which would push open the shadows and dig out noise that normally isn't visible on a normal gamma display.

Oh, you're in a FREE country. I assumed you were in the USSA. :)

Did you see the footage on the news recently of 20 philadelphia police officers beating 3 guys senseless with nightsticks? I wish I cought that with my ex1... Then again without a telephoto lens the camera would probably have been confiscated, and destruction of property by governement officials is not carried by my insurance provider...

Did I mention what a load of crap it is that I can possibly get sued for someone being stupid enough to trip over camera equipment? I'm sure that would happen in Europe too, however we started this stupid business and I really wish it would end...

In regards to the title of this thread --
I'm using my girlfriends old dell notebook and I can see why you would think the images are grainy -- they aren't as sharp as they could be, and in the dark areas that translates poorly with most screens.

However -- if I were on my 23" Cinema Display, I'm sure that I would be able to resolve that image as being merely a little under-exposed.

It's amazing how much of a difference you can see on a monitor that can resolve native resolutions...

Other variables would be your connection to said monitor, your video card, the program you are using to view said video, the settings of playback in said program, and the computers memory, and like I mentioned the quality of the video.

Unfortunately my G5's wireless internet adapter is broken, therefore I wouldn't be able to verify this for you, however my assumption is that you merely will have to do some fine adjustments in terms of your camera settings -- ones that will allow for a better, more contrast balanced image.

Well anyways -- best of luck.

Hey Alex, there are countless reports of people with cameras being detained here in the USSA, by government officials, for several hours. It's getting dangerous to own a camera in this country. Some of us used to joke about using a camera in Russia, but now all those tables are turned--on us!

With regard to the grain exaggeration in the image, I have noted that on lower-than-native resolution displays, grain is magnified, especially if it's a rough scaling to the destination pixel size. A display that only shows 540 of 1080 lines can make the noise TWICE as prominent. It occured to me while reading your post that this may be the OP's situation and why he's seeing enhanced noise and we're not.

1:1 pixel mapping is the only way to really know what you've got.
