F3: Noise in Slog?

A reset is the only thing to absolutely eliminate any possiblity of something buried in the menu which may be causing it. It just seems logical to eliminate any possiblities, then re-test and see if the problem continues.

I use to regularly reset my F3 because who knows what I changed last time I used it or why.. for me it is just habit to reset and make sure everything is setup from a baseline. But I know everyone is diffrent to that regard.

Sure send a link. I'm no expert, but I shot with the F3 for almost 2 years and never once saw anything that would bother me (unless zooming in 200-300% on the NLE and really looking).

You mentioned it just seemed to start? That was the odd part.

You won't have to reinstall any firmware after doing a reset. A reset just puts all your menu item settings back to defaults, and you will lose all custom picture profiles. I don't know if the RGB/SLOG is wiped out in a reset, but you can remove the upgrade and put it to any SXS card just to be SAFE.

Thanks I'll re-set the camera tonight, and re-install S-log too. Yes it started the other week when I first shot with S-log.

I'm wondering why are you suggesting a complete reset which is a PITA. AFAIK the only things that could affect this are detail, aperture and frequency. Just look at those settings & just do some tests. Best thing I know of for looking at moire is to focus on a laptop screen, especially zoomed in . You'll get plenty of moire, then just change your settings including Slog and see if you can get rid of it or what makes it worse. If you have a good monitor you should be able to tell what's going on in a hour.

I'll give this a try too, I read somewhere to turn detail off during filming S-log, I'm not too sure what this means, but I'll have a look in the menu tonight.

Thanks guys.

Jack are you shooting slog using a picture profile, or the paid slog? I never used the paid slog so I wouldn't even begin to know how to pick the paid slog over the picture profile slog on the F3, but perhaps you can test both and see if there is any difference.

I did shoot a few projects in slog via picture profile to SXS 8-bit and never had quality issues, other than some noise but it was "normal" noise.

No I'm using the paid S-log, I only bought it a few months ago to open up the 444 option for whatever external recording option I decided on. I haven't tried the picture profile S-log, to be honest I couldn't find it in my profiles? I just set the camera to, 1.5G RGB444 & S-Log, and pressed record. Is this what I'm doing wrong?

I just found these profiles from AbelCine http://blog.abelcine.com/2012/06/28/new-f3-firmware-adds-s-log-to-every-camera/

Just pick an empty slot under your picture profiles, create a new one, name it, then edit it and under GAMMA go through the list where you see REC709, cinegamma1, cinegamma2 ,etc.. etc.. until you see "slog".

Good luck and I hope you get your issue resolved.

Cheers Dennis, I have a feeling this will sort the issue out. I'll let you know.

Reading the Abel link, Andy says, ''If you set the output to 422 & Video, then you can turn on S-Log in the Picture Profile menu. Even though it says 'video' you are outputting S-log.''

The great thing about the Abel settings - apart from having them in picture profiles - is that you can white balance and edit the settings within the profile which you can't do in the slog mode.

Re: recorders - I've been using a Gemini for several years which looks great but sucks 26G/min. and requires Avid Metafuze (only on Windows) to transcode, in my case to DnX 175X. And for some reason Metafuze will not recognize the .wav files from the Gemini cards, so you then have to manually sync each clip in the Avid, importing each .wav file. I've finally run out of patience with CD waiting for DnX and have ordered a Blade, and will record directly to DnX. I'll see how it goes. I can't see how the recorded image would look any different from the Gemini and it will save many hours of work and drive space. Love the Gemini, but for some reason they haven't had success implementing DnX or Pro Res.
