No Words Adequate.

Let's look at humans for a sec here, not a bad breed overall, but raise them poorly in a bad environment and they can display all manner of behavioral problems including homicidal tendancies. Why should any breed of dog react differently given a lousy home and upbringing?

FrizzleFry,

Do me a favor and don't dumb down my posts. I don't like to quote myself, so I'll let people read what I wrote instead of your pararephrased bullshit.

I never indicated that my dogs were misbehaving. To the contrary, my dogs behave just as Jack Russells should.

At the same time, they are a working breed and are pre-coded for certain behaviors. We try to structure, channel or re-focus their predispositions when situations warrant. As with all dogs, this sometimes means we have to be somewhat flexible ourselves - as in keeping the kids away from the dogs when they're eating.

My quote about American pit bulls originally being bred for fighting is straight from the venerable and well-sanctioned Pit Bull Rescue website. I didn't make it up and merely tied the idea of "breeding-qualities" into my own observations about my own terriers. Again, you may not be able to remove the intended purpose from the dog no matter how it is trained and treated.

Just a point to consider, not based on (or at least quoting) any science, just my own observations.

The last thing I'll reiterate in this particular case is that the mother of that boy is squarely at fault in this instance, and the dogs (whether by bad breeding, training or just a bad day at the office) shouldn't shoulder the full responsibility.

overland, my intention wasn't to offend you. you're right, i was off base. last thing i want to do around here is piss anyone off.

JRT owners are a lot like their dogs - prone to obsessive behavior, loud fits and chasing of fuzzy brown things. No harm, no foul.

HiJack!! Post a picture of your favorite beverage.
FYI, this one isn't a pretentious thing, it's just really, really good tasting.

Letter carrier

(wince)

I was bit 3 times on the job. One time it was so bad that there was a line of interns out the door to come in and look at my leg. That one was a Norwegian Elkhound mix that had mauled a kid the year before and wound up being put down. I haven't come that close to crapping myself since I was 2.

I had one scary encounter with a pit bull. I was at the wall next to this house, leaning over to put the mail in the box. I saw the dog, and it came running. I pulled my arm back, but wasn't too worried because the wall was at least 4.5 feet high. There was a kid in the yard, and she looked at me with a blank expression, and no emotion in her voice "You better run, 'cuz he's coming for ya" Sure enough, that pup was over the wall in a blink, and I back pedaled down the lawn, and out into the street, emptying my next-to-useless can of pepper spray into that things face. Suddenly, the can is empty, I'm in the middle of the street, I trip, fall onto my back, and that freight train is still coming. Soooo I thoght that would be the end. Adios. But (I swear this is like a movie, but it's true) the spray starting taking effect enough to distract it. At least long enough for me to haul ass out of there.

Owning a dog is like having a child: it is more responsibility than right.

Funny thing is that I still love dogs.

The letter carrier story reminded me of an incident I had almost forgotten. Years ago I had a girlfreind whos parents owned a yorkshire terrier. Everytime I'd come to the house, stand at the bottom of the stairs waiting for mom to get the girl, this yorkie would terrorize me. Round and round my feet it would go like a shark on benzadrine biting at my calves and heels and the bastard would draw blood! (The girl was way cute)...One day I'd had enough and when no one was looking I snapped and booted that bugger right up to the top step and into the wall. he wined and howled and limped around. Mama came running and asked what had happened. "couldn't tell you" I lied "maybe he stepped on a tack or something. All the while this dog is shivering and wimpering in mamas arms. Anyway, that little prick was my best freind after that and if it even got wind that I disaproved of its being it would sit in the corner wagging its tiny tale. I think its problem was the ribbon the mom used to keep tied on its little head was too tight!

no matterwhat, a dog is still a wild animal deep down. People get a little too comfortable with some animals. Especially if the animal is "possesive". idiocy is what caused that childs death. And this is coming from a Dog person.
