I've been playing around with DV Rack - Quickstream doesn't provide all the features (tweaking options) that DV Rack has - but I like the simple user interface compared to DV Rack and once you play around with DV Rack - turning the nobs to adjust is a nightmare - hopefully they will change it.
Pricing IMHO is to expensive - for a 40 gig hardrive option your looking at $729 - compared to DV Rack $499 plus I'm using IOGear 40Gig drive which cost me $120.
yes sorry guys some people that have gotten the new one wanted me to test a few things out for the review so I am still doing that.. its all good though!
dewman one thing your not taking into account is that the quickstream is very portable and definately beats hauling around a laptop. Yes, though, pricewise dv rack is awesome option
btw does IOgear allow you to directly capture to their drives as avi and wait....i just now realized it. I was thinking you were mentioning IOgear because they had a drive that functioned like quickstream with its compressing avi and watnot. Cuz i was gonna say thats awesome for only $120 bucks. nvm
Sorry about the old review link..i'm a newbie to the site.
Avenger007 - your right on about the portability of QS verus DV Rack...
I purchased the IOGear 2.0 40 gig external hardrive to test DVRack, but as everyone knows it doesn't allow you capture directly to the drive without the aid of a secondary software, such as DVRack.
I'm trying to find a solution which will allow me to capture the video directly to an external hardrive - it looks like I have to options - QuickStream (A+ on portability, D on pricing) - DVRack (C + on portability, B on pricing) of course this is only my humble opinion !
bear with me on my newbie mistake in the Video areana!
Ok I got my 2 replacement Quickstreams 2.0's after the 2 1.0 ones failed on me. After testing the first one, it seems to initialize with the 100a just fine. As soon as I move the firewire cable the tiniest bit, the lights start to flash and it tries to reinitialize again. Sometimes when I hold it to the left it seems to work fine again. So far i've tried 3 4pin-6pin cables and they all do the same. Now here's the thing that doesn't make sense. If I plug the quickstream into my PC, the green light goes solid, I can see the files on there etc.. I can do move the cable around all I want, and it never loses connection. Why would it have a perfect connection on the PC, but not the dvx? I tested it on my 100a and my friends 100a, and the same thing happens.
Now for the second quickstream. This one worked right from the start with no problems whatsoever. I used the same cables that I tested with the other quickstream. Works fine. Review button works good. Every clip captures fine.
Btw I have tried it with just the internal battery, the external battery, AND the AC power, same thing happens.
I also tried uploading the latest firmware to the first drive, thinking that it might have had an older firmware. It uploaded perfectly, but the problem still persists
I'm going to call MCE tomorrow and see if they'll have some kind of answer. I've been waiting since February to get a drive that works! If they would ship me a new drive right away, THEN I send this one back, I will be happy. I don't want to go through this RMA crap again...I waited too long!
Well, at least one quickstream works for now. I'll have to use tapes in the other 100a for the wedding i'm filming this weekend. Ugh....
Now that the FireStore FS-4 has been announced, it makes it much harder to see value in the QuickStream solution. They'll either have to really ramp up the features or really cut the price to stay competitive with the $749 FS-4...
